Why does this qualify as a penalty? Shouldn’t you get to choose who you put on the ice?

They do get the choice of who they put on the ice. They made that choice and failed to put out that lineup.

Back in the day my coach forgot to write me in a lineup and he got suspended for a game.

It was in a tournament.

And he got suspended for the championship game.

We won

In the grand scheme of things we all sucked, so there's no movie about it.


Anyways, it's pretty stupid about that unless they want to know so teams don't load up goons, or something? Though that has happened and the NHL has never intervened, so why ?

It's probably so they can present the starting lineups to the TV audiences and such.

And you do get to choose them.

The away team has to submit a line up first and then home team then submits theirs iirc. It's a home ice advantage
