I will guess about 50 points will earn a playoff spot (48 game season) and since all games will be played in the eastern conference 3 point games will be bigger than ever. I feel the 3rd period with the lead you must get the win in regulation and if you wind up going to ot with the lead it will be like a loss.

My guess is : 20-23-5 45 points with a probable 48 game season...
Your thoughts?
 
Last in the Atlantic. 12-15 in conference. Too much emphasis on division teams that isles are inferior against. Maybe ride some lightning in the short season but this team has too many holes and relying on hopes and dreams of players waiting to step up.

In the ATL Philly might implode based on its defense and goaltending. NJ usually finds a way to win.

Look at the cap hits and cash payouts of the isles vs the ATL teams. Huge disparity.
 
Isles finish 7-9 if the defense stays healthy and I think power play will be very good this year...one good 20 game stretch from making it and isles are streaky team...I'm an optimist realistically 11-13 finish in confrence
 
i think the shortened season benefits this team. because they were younger, it was harder to be consistent over an 82 game stretch and is one --of many-- issues this team had in the past.

i see this being the year this isles finally turn it around and become a competitive team. it may not mean too much because its a shortened season, but it could be a sign of good things to come. im not saying playoffs, because i dont wanna get my hopes up

any team that doesnt hit the ground running wont be looking good come playoff time, so we may see very good teams missing the playoffs because of a poor start.

isles go 25-21-4 54 pts

its gunna b close to impossible tho because the atl division is a powerhouse. keeping my fingers crossed 4 now
 
Could be a tough season. As i recall, the Isles have done pretty well overall against Western Conf. teams over the last years, while they've had some serious trouble picking up points in the Atlantic division. With only in-conference games this year and probably like 20 of them against NYR, NJ, PHI and PIT, I won't get my hopes up too high.

If we can have someone that (at least almost) fills Parenteau's void when it comes to scoring and the d stays healthy, we might have a chance to slip in to a 7th or 8th.

Without some significant moves before the puck drops, this sounds about right. Isles still need to fill a couple of spots to ice a full team, and what they do have isn't going to make any other team in the Atlantic shake in their skates. If they fill the open spots only at the bottom with callups or camp tryouts, then it's probably a 12-15 season. If they fill the open spots at the top somehow -- a big trade or something like that, then maybe they can do some damage. With a short season, how they start is that much more important, and this is a team that has been adrift by late November the past few seasons before turning it on a bit around the All Star break. If they start like that this time around, they're finished. The status of the D will be crucial too. Is Hamonic ready to go or not? Is Lubo staying in the KHL or coming over? There could be two huge holes on an already thin D depending on the answers to those questions.
 
Most of the games are going to be in the division. The Atlantic is a buzzsaw. My guess is that the Isles hang tough and compete, but they don't have the talent to win against teams that are spending to the cap.
 
Remember when the Isles always have trouble winning...in the big games. Now that every game is so important, will the young boys be able to step up? It's not JT's line that anyone has to worry about, it's the other 3 lines just like last year which brought absolutely no consistency. The fourth line was inept, KO didn't start producing until the games were completely meaningless. I don't know about you guys but all I think back to is last year when the Isles played OTT on President's Day with the playoffs within reach, and they played one of the worst game I've ever seen them play.

Keeping my expectations realistic, I'd go eleventh in the east with their coming out party taking place during their first years in BK.
 
We've been terrible in our own Division the past few years and are going to get heaping helpings of the Rags, Devs, Flyers, and Penguins in the 48 game schedule. We've got to do better than winning one out of every five division games or we don't have a prayer.
 
I think the shortened season will also help the Islanders, as BigTim1988 previously talked about. How much it helps though, is a huge question mark. Goaltending is a question mark... is Rickey going to be playing his normal 2-4 games.. and losing those games for us before he gets injured? Also Visnovsky is a big question mark as well.. does he play? ... Does he improve our defense?

I'm going to predict that the Islanders either just make-or-miss out of the playoffs this year. 8th or 9th in conference.

50pts isnt likely to earn a playoff spot. 92pts was the bare minimum for last year's eastern conference, with 95pts being the minimum in the WC. It will likely be 55pts or more to make it this year.
 
If Strome makes the team as the #2 Center and does good, and Visnovsky is playing they will make the playoffs. They would have 2 scoring lines, 3rd line will be the shutdown line with Grabner-Nielsen-Ullstrom. 4th line with Martin-Cizikas-Boulton isn't too shabby. Seems like every year there is a lot of if's though.
 
Tavares top 10 in points Islanders bottom 5 in NHL....

but if Nabby stands on his head and we come out of the gate strong with good play from Okposo,Bailey, and Boyes we could be in the hunt for an 7th or 8th seed....

It will take minimal mistakes and fundemental sound play to be close, especially in our division...

This line could even produce some decent scoring output as well if they find some chemistry. As you mentioned though, this team is full of "ifs".
 
Once the schedule is out, Isles fans may want to turtle a little and think about their happy place. It's got to be division heavy and it really hurts us in that aspect. Yes, we play very well against the Western Conference, I doubt there will be much of that this season.

It's going to a major hill to climb for this team to make the playoffs.

this is what im thinking....A division heavy schedual kills us
 
We are going to be eaten alive this season. With that being said, this will hurt less than most recent seasons considering the (now) brighter future of the team and the different schedule. I see this season as a win-win, we could either surprise and make the playoffs or get destroyed (as I expect) and get one more awesome pick in a very deep draft. One thing I will say for sure is that next year is DEFINITELY the time to really step up and make our presence known in the league in terms of the timing of our prospect pool. All the years of sucking and solid drafting should come to fruition next season, plus the security of our future in Brooklyn should make it easier for Snow to get better FA's than in recent times.

Not feeling optimistic about this season, but happy as hell that I'll actually get to watch some hockey this season. The only thing I'm optimistic about is that Tavares is going to get better, once again.
