Proposal: Predictions for the Oilers lines, come playoffs.

Is that because McD and Drai are a disaster together defensively?
Or because we don't have the depth to stack em on the same line?

I think we have enough depth up front to go with any line combos but we are screwed if Walman-Bouchard is still a pairing in playoffs.

It's just usually a sign that the team is in trouble and not playing well historically. Whether it's lack of depth or one of them is hobbled/injured.

I decided to get some AI help with my line combination predictions. These look pretty good, but I think I'd steer clear of Ceci on PP2.

Top Line:

  1. Connor McDavid (C)
  2. Evander Kane (LW)
  3. Zach Hyman (RW) or Kailer Yamamoto (RW)
    • Reasoning: McDavid and Kane have had solid chemistry, with Kane providing a physical, net-front presence to complement McDavid's speed and playmaking. Zach Hyman could also be a good fit on the right wing, providing more speed and grit, but Yamamoto might get a look if they want someone with more of a "grinding" style and additional penalty-killing abilities.

Second Line:

  1. Leon Draisaitl (C)
  2. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (LW)
  3. Kyler Yamamoto (RW) or Jesse Puljujärvi (RW)
    • Reasoning: Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins have had great success together in the past, with Nugent-Hopkins being a great two-way player who can complement Draisaitl's playmaking. Yamamoto is a natural fit as a gritty, defensively responsible winger who can also generate offensive opportunities. Puljujärvi, if he steps up, could add more size and a physical presence on the right side.

Third Line:

  1. Ryan McLeod (C)
  2. Warren Foegele (LW)
  3. Sam Gagner (RW) or Devon Shore (RW)
    • Reasoning: McLeod, a young, fast center, would give this line speed and depth. Foegele brings physicality and can chip in offensively, while Gagner or Shore could provide experience and defensive stability.

Fourth Line:

  1. Brad Malone (C)
  2. Mattias Janmark (LW)
  3. Tyler Benson (RW) or Derek Ryan (C)
    • Reasoning: The fourth line is likely to be more of a defensive, checking line, with players like Janmark and Ryan offering a solid two-way game. Malone and Benson, depending on who’s in the lineup, would provide energy and help grind down the opposition.

Power Play Units:

  • Power Play 1:
    • McDavid (C), Draisaitl (LW), Kane (RW), with Bouchard (D) and Nurse (D) at the point.
  • Power Play 2:
    • Nugent-Hopkins (C), Hyman (LW), Yamamoto (RW), with Ceci (D) and Ekholm (D) at the point.

Skinner-McDavid-Hyman
Kane-Draisaitl-Frederic
Podkolzin-RNH-Arvidsson
Janmark-Henrique-Brown

Ekholm-Bouchard
Nurse-Walman
Kulak-Stetcher

Pickard
Skinner
These^^ are good combos, I like the bottom 2 lines because it keeps some chemistry together. I myself like the top lines also, but IDK if Skinner will really get rope to play top mins.

If J. Skinner is out of the line up/ another idea to your combos. I would think this is possible:

Frederic Mcdavid Hyman
Pod Drai Arvy
Kane Nuge Perry
Janmark Henrique Brown

I like Jeff Skinner with Janmark and Brown but idk how to make that work.

I asked an AI a while back what odds it gave the Oilers of winning the cup and it said 30%. Then I asked about other teams and it didn't take long for it to add up to over 100%.

Nuge - McDavid - Hyman
Pod - Draisaitl - Arv
Kane - Frederick - Perry
Janmark - Henrique - Brown
Extra - Skinner, Kapanen, Jones

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Stecher
Kulak - Walman
Extra - Emberson/Klingberg

Skinner/Pickard

Wouldn't touch the Drai line because they were buzzing before he got reinjured and Arvi and Pod are playing great.

McDavid's line is the question mark. Would love to see Frederick play with him for a few before playoffs but if that can't happen have to keep him with nuge and hyman.

I keep the nuge at center thing going. I haven’t liked nuge on Connor’s wing this year

Skinner McDavid Hyman
Pod Drai Arvidsson
Kane Nuge Frederic
Brown Henrique Perry

Janmark, Kap, Jones as extras.

Ekholm Bouch
Nurse Walman
Kulak Stetcher

I would start Pickard game 1 also unless stu plays really well coming back then I’d give him the nod. Either way I have no issue switching goalies this postseason.

Gotta make them first. Only Calgary can catch the Oilers now and it’s not an impossible feat. Oilers need two more wins to lock it down. I don’t think they’ll beat the Blues, Jets or Kings so they need to win the San Jose games.

If they lose one of those, they don’t deserve the playoffs.

Kapanen just can't be in the game 1 lineup. He makes brutal mistakes with the puck all the time. Skinner sitting after scoring nearly 20 goals, outproducing Arvidsson pretty much all season, tying for fifth in goals on a team that can't score goals, all with basically zero opportunity would be one of the most absurd coaching decisions we've seen here. The whole situation is comical. We're going to run Janmark and Kapanen because they kill penalties poorly, and sit one of the only guys on the team who can beat a goalie from distance.

If the fully healthy lineup isn't this:

Kane - McDavid - Hyman
Pod - Draisaitl - Arvidsson
Skinner - Nuge - Frederic
Perry - Henrique - Brown/Janmark

Then there's something seriously wrong with this coaching staff. If Perry can't keep up, then sit him for Janmark. You just can't sit guys who pace for 20 goals when your entire team has 5 of them.

We all know it's going to happen though. Janmark is obviously getting that spot over Skinner, and inexplicably Kapanen seems to have an inside edge too.

It's a bit surprising how many posters don't know what side many of our wingers play.

This is a tough one.

Prediction
RNH-McDavid-Hyman
Podkolzin*-Draisaitl-Arvidsson
Frederic-Henrique-Perry
Kane*-Janmark-Brown
*Podkolzin/Kane swap when Kane is up to speed

Ekholm-Bouchard

Preference

Kane-Draisaitl-Arvidsson
Frederic-RNH-Perry

i think the best fwd lineups would be something like this

93-97-18
91-29-33
92-19-28
29-97-18

Your preference makes sense. The expectation is kind of gag worthy but probably spot on.

Looking at the rosters in Edm and Bako, I would not resign any UFA’s except maybe the guy that turns 40 in May. Hard to be confident about our playoff chances

This is like a jigsaw puzzle with several pieces that don’t fit and several that you cant try cuz they’re injured and the puzzle master keeps trying to hammer in the pieces that don’t fit

Prediction

Nuge-McD-Hyman
Podz-Drai-Arvidsson

What I want to see

Skinner-Davo-Hyman

Ekholm-Walman
Kulak-Stecher

With Savoie, Philp and Emberson the first ones in depending on where in the lineup things are looking ugly.

in 52 games with the Oilers, Kapanen is -16. One of the worst forwards in the league right now. They need to banish him as soon as they're healthy.

Jones and Kapanen are the easy scratches. Even on defense, Stecher and Emberson sit.

Although an issue is that we might have to replace 5 forwards. Do we really scratch Janmark? It may disturb some, but I see Jeff Skinner as a potential scratch. Could Henrique sit? Probably not him since he's a center. I don't see Brown coming out. I don't see Perry out either
