GDT: Predatory Caniacs

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

That's fair. The tags are probably more for casual viewers than anything and mostly just follow up on what the broadcast team was talking about at the time. For instance, they were talking about how starting the next game will cause Burns to move up the games played list, and after the graphic, there was a tag showing Burns' TOI/game for the season.

He also wants them for the PP and PK units, just to identify who's out there.
4 NATIONS USA broadcasters had a ticker that showed players on ice. It was awful and distracting. Most Canes fans can see who is on the ice and don’t need the prompts.

Then again, I have a product that allows me to cut off the tickers on bottom of screen so it’s won’t be an issue for me I guess

Nah, the ice time and lines on the bottom of the screen are part of the scorebug. Not what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about tags like this (obviously a different game)

And what if I told you that Kooch faced 10 low danger shots tonight and had 10 saves on those low danger shots? And faced 2 high danger shots tonight and allowed 2 high danger goals?

Well, that sure is comforting. /s

Season stats matter more and if the first goal was one of them then I put that in the low danger category.

Tripp, who usually cheerleads said Pyotr was not good tonight. He wasn’t.

I know he’s your guy because you typically chime in when he is criticized but….the facts remain. He has been ticker-like in the playoffs and he gives up too many easy goals.

Ah got it. That’s the old ABC setup from years ago. Well, it doesn’t work for me but with Mike not calling the play by play with specifics maybe worth a test.

The Hurricanes scored 0 goals at 5 on 5 tonight. How many playoff games do you think they win scoring zero goals at 5 on 5?

If they lose a game 5-4 because the goalie sucks that’s one thing. If you score 1 goal you are going to lose. Period. Blaming goaltending for that is lazy bullshit. And yes Tripp putting it that way is lazy bullshit.

Back at ya’ with the BS response. We just don’t agree on this.

Bojangles it is.

Jesus, that 2nd pairing had 6 giveaways tonight. Taylor Hall had 4 by himself. The Canes were surprisingly careless with the puck
So many bad passes. And some of those turnovers aren't on the guy making the pass but the lack of someone else being in the right spot because the pass was to the open area where you would expect someone to be

The offense sucked and the goalie sucked. It's not an either/or, they were both brutal tonight

It’s also more nuanced than that. The offense couldn’t score, because Saros made some ridiculous saves. He had at least 3 highlight reel saves against Stankoven alone. The goalie sucked because the defense left him out to dry. The line change on the 2nd was shades of “early in the year” problems have happened and for the 3rd, I don’t know how 4 players couldn’t take the puck from 1 guy along the boards, let alone let him skate into the slot with it. Meanwhile, Evangelista is skating from the blue line right in front of Kotchetkov, completely untouched the entire way.

So we had 4 guys fighting O'Reilly along the boards, including our two defensemen. And somehow O'Reilly wins, and everyone loses Evangelista in the process. He deflects it directly in front of Kooch.
Watch KK on that play. There was ZERO fight in that battle with him. Thats what frustrates me with him, and I'm sure that's what the coach sees as well.

KK was off all night. In the 3rd he had a cross ice outlet pass to i think Hall in the neutral zone that he managed to place about 5 feet behind him that led to a break the other way

Speaking of….

Any idea when we might get a proper scorebug in the top left corner, instead of that monstrosity across the bottom of the screen?

Asking for a friend.

In an unrelated note, what did everyone think of the name tags over the players tonight? It's something that the producer finally returned to (after about two years) and we're doing more custom ones instead of just player stats (for the most part).
Actually I was going to try to contact you regarding those NASCAR graphics…I like them for the power play. Like anything they can be overdone but for IDing who is on the ice during the power play they’re great.

I see we outshot one of the worst teams in the league 35-16 and managed to lose 1-3...was the game as comically bad as the stat-line appears? Are we using the "got goalied" narrative (yet again)?

Actually the Canes played pretty darn well (especially considering the jet lag hangover from the Western trip) but just couldn’t pot enough of their many offensive chances to be competitive. Sound familiar?

To my understanding, each broadcast service has their own way of doing it. DiamondSports/Bally/FanDuel has the scorebug along the bottom, so barring a change in that regard, that’s what the team is going to be sticking with.

Like I said, you’ll see them most on the PP/PK just to identify who is out there (with maybe an additional stat like “X Power play points” or “X Shorthanded goals”), and occasionally they’ll put up a stat to follow up on whatever Mike and Tripp are talking about at the time. I don’t think it’ll be overused (I think we had 7 the entire game last night), but since I control it, I can spread them out if it seems like the game is getting over saturated with them.

Eh, it was valid last night. Saros really did prevent some surefire goals. Stankoven had a few in front of the net off passes from behind the net, there was a cross crease save like 30 seconds before Nashville’s 3rd goal, etc.
