I think Trouba should start here. Let him start the season in the 5-6 pair. Start with Postma as the 7. And go from that. If he plays good enough to stay in after a few games, he should stay. If he looks shaky and Postma is a better fit for the lineup, send him down then. I tell you what, in another 2 years, primed Buf, Enstrom, Bogo, with still young rising stars in Morrissey and Trouba, we will have quite the blue line.

There is no way Kane is better than Tavares. It's not even close.

Ya it really is not close. Kane is a great player, and with a legit 1C or 2C play maker, he should hit 40+. I think playing with Joker or Mark without injuries he will still hit 30. But overall JT is much better. But if Kane turns into a consistent 40-50 goal scorer with his intensity and physical play I would take him over JT for building a championship team. 40-50 power forwards with that much heart are even more rare then a skilled, top 10 in scoring 1C IMO.

When I was a kid, a long, long time ago they used to talk about nhlers who with two guys would dominate 5 good players at a time.

Evander could do that with one.

Just sayin'.

Kane was the only player that looked decent tonight. He's on a mission this season.

Bogo...yikes. I really hope he gets it together for the regular season.

Lowry was running over guys at the start of the game. He looks slow though.

Trouba seemed very un-confident to me.

Wright tries really hard. About all I can say about him.

Pasquale (spelling)...impresses me. No reason he couldn't be a backup in the NHL.

Rest of the guys just blended in.

I was at the game tonight. Terrible performance by everyone except kane. Kane was everywhere and was double shifted several times. Wright is garbage and needs to be released. But he won't be until noel is fired. A lack of effort was obvious by many players. It may bepreseason but it looks to me everyone tonight looked very complacent with their roles. Aagain, except for kane. Thank you evander for making it worthwhile for so many of us in the stands and a shoutout too for pasquale. He played well in a losing effort.

Coach Noel post-game

Coach-Noel-300x167.jpg

Coach Noel - Assessment of the game. What did Adam Lowry show him in his pre-season debut? Were the Oilers allowed to get to the front of the net too easily? Adam Pardy's game. Getting regulars into games together. Update on Zach Bogosian.

Very interesting game from a statistical angle.

Kane played well and pulled his line up.
Yakupov was shut down.
Clitsome played a high events game.
Trouba did very well.
Any line Wright goes on ends up getting shell shocked as usual.
Stuart and Redmond pair got bent over a few times.

Think of it this way -- with Evander Kane off the ice, the Oilers out shot-attempted the Jets 19-16. With him on the ice, Jets outshot 28-10

Pasquale is interesting...two years ago, he was on the verge...but last year, on a crappy team, we forgot about him.

Tonight, he made me think about goalies beyond sv%. He handles the puck very well. In the era before the trapezoid he would have made a huge difference. Now, I think I see how goaltenders can make a difference beyond sv%.

I'm a fan.

he's right.

Kane doesn't make any player on the ice better and neither does jokinen. Probably why they suck together.

Been saying that about Kane from day 1 and it's why he so desperately needs a playermaker to centre him.

They both want to do the exact same thing when they enter the zone. I counted a number of times where they nearly went offside because one was too busy carrying the puck in. Granted at this point in time Kane is much better. They were able to look good because of the opposition that they were playing but a good team will stand them up at the blue line every time. I still really don't Like the fit.

Garret, do you happen to know what the goals against for each defensemen are when they're on the ice? Seems like every time someone scores against us, Stuart and or Postma are on the ice.

Kane made Burmi better (and vice versa).
I think (and hope) Scheifele will be the same.

No kidding. Kane is still a way below average passer, he can't do much on the PP outside being a presence at the front of the net. Kane is one of the best 1 on 1 vs a D with the puck. Comparing him to a franchise player, a #1 centre is a bit much. For crap sakes, JT has made Matt Moulson into a PPG player.

Could you help me a bit with my understanding of the Corsi?

From what I understand the Corsi is kind of like a +/- of shots. Every shot taken by your team when you're on the ice is a + and every shot against is a -.

If this is correct, then I can't imagine that it would be a very reliable indicator of how Frolik and Kane play, as they are both notoriously known for throwing absolutely everything on net regardless of whether it's a good chance or not. Jokinen also plays this way. It seems like one of those things where in some situations, like Clitsome vs Yakupov, it would be very impressive to have the number that he did, but in other situations it's not very representative of what's actually going on on the ice.

This isn't saying Kane and Frolik had a bad games by any means, all I'm saying is that if I understand the system correctly it won't matter how Kane actually plays, he'll be a + player the vast majority of the time.
