Man, I really didn't appreciate how impressive Burns is prior to today. I suppose I'm more impressionable seeing him in person and paying attention to how he plays cuz he's the shiny new toy. But it's really hard to not compare him to Dougie, and to me, this is what we wanted Dougie to be. He costs $5.28M in cap and only $4.875M in real money...is that right? That's amazing for what I watched on the ice today.

At this point, bad health looks to be the only thing preventing a transition from Dougie into something objectively better and cheaper (with one off year in DeAngelo). That would be a coup.

I feel like Stromwall will get time on the team this year if he does go to Chicago. If this was a few years ago, he would have had a great chance to get time. He looks like he could easily be a Maenalanen type (not comparing play style) that could play in this league and be decent.

My thoughts:

1) I don't take much from this game. It was a preseason game with an NHL vs. an AHL team, basically. It could have easily been 7-0 Canes, though.

2) Brent Burns looked amazing. Even when he wasn't putting it on net, he gets his stick so quick on the puck and makes immediate decisions. He looked really agile out there. I think being paired next to Slavin will give him leeway to shine offensively, and being a deep group defensively should pare down his minutes and keep him fresh. I could see Burns/Slavin playing for 30 minutes in playoff games. And Pesce/Skjei for the rest of the game lol.

3) Jordan Staal looked kinda fast out there at one point.

4) Necas looked pretty slick. He made one bad play defensively and I questioned his center-dom, but otherwise he looked nice. That said, b/c Florida didn't play their real team, you can't read much from this game.

5) I didn't love Ethan Bear tonight. He made a few good moves but I liked every other D better, personally.

6) Probably most importantly, the power play looked good and it looked really different. Getting Burns on the point really makes a team have to respect the shot. He was moving it pretty fast. It was definitely more "Dougie" than "TDA", but I hope that we kind of have a little from column A and a little from column B. It seems like Burns will eventually man the 1st unit and Coughlan will man the 2nd. I saw Jarvis at the point some as well but I don't know if that was intended strategy or just how some play developed in particular.
