News Article: Powers: Blackhawks doing homework on Schaefer

i feel Iginla after hip surgery still more value than KK.

People here seem to think he’s bringing back a top forward prospect in a trade. I may be wrong but I don’t see it.
KK has been overrated by Hawks fans for years now. The hope that he will only get better looks like just that, hope.

As for Schaeffer... as it sits now, he is a no brainer pick at #1.

Don't see big deal here

It's a big 4 who could go #1 in this draft so they should be doing homework on all of them

What are comps for Schaefer coming into this draft? Does he bring dynamic our current crop of young defenders dont?

Should also be open to idea of trading pick potentially
Heiskanen

Overrated in what way? He was a near PpG D in his draft year and followed that up with 73 points in 54 games, with a fine showing at the WJC with Canada during his D+1. This year should have been his rookie Pro season if not for the fumbling of keeping him in the NHL last year. The kid doesn't turn 21 until the summer.

Do some posters in this thread realize that Nazar had hip surgery prior to his freshman season? It's not a hockey death sentence for Iggy 2.0
Not all hip surgeries are the same. Nazar’s “hip” surgery was for a sports hernia, which doesn’t involve the hip joint at all. Wasn’t able to find out what type of surgery Iginla had, but if it involves the actual hip joint that’s a much more serious surgery.

It was announced that Nazar would have surgery on October 18, 2022. He made his season debut on February 10, 2023. So about a week shy of 4 months. Tij has surgery on December 4, 2024 and has been announced as out for the rest of the season. If he were on the same timeline as Nazar, he'd probably be returning right for the start of the WHL Playoffs, which begin March 28, 2025.

If Schaefer is as good as people say then I dont see any issue taking him even with what appears to be our strongest/best group of D prospects since mid 00's

From 2002-2005 the Hawks used high draft capital and selected

Anton Babchuk (2002 1st round)
Duncan Keith (2002 2nd round)
Brent Seabrook (2003 1st round)
Michal Barinka (2003 2nd round)
Cam Barker (2004 1st round)

In that same time frame they also had some success with guys drafted outside of those higher rounds on blueline

James Wisniewski (2002 5th)
Lasse Kukkonen (2003 5th)
Dustin Byfuglien (2003 8th)
Niklas Hjalmarsson (2005 4th)

There is no reason not to continue to build up depth in spot and potentially gives you trade chips/scenario's as well

Lots of posters here don't follow prospects outside of the Hawks enough and it shows
Prospects are lame. A bunch of teenagers playing against other teenagers in lesser leagues. You have to hope to get lucky that their skillset translates to the best league in the world playing against fully grown men. More often than not they're not what you'd hope.

I think it's mostly a waste of time, personally.

I don’t think anyone slandered Tig. Not knowing details of his hip surgery gives me pause in coveting him at a cost too.

Why did you include Kukkonen? He played 159 total NHL games over parts of four seasons, averaging 15 minutes a night and had 22 points.
