Potential Trade Targets (2025 edition)

Still a long shot trade candidate this season, the most important factor in getting a Seth Jones trade completed is figuring out how much of his contract will be retained by the Blackhawks. Jones makes $9.5 million against the cap and is in only the third year of an eight-year deal that expires after the 2029-30 season.

That's a lot of money for Chicago to hold on to for a long period of time, but with the news last week that the salary cap will rise to $95.5 million next season, then $104 million in 2026-27 and $113.5 million in 2027-28, the burden of retention becomes less significant and this factor could make Jones a more attractive trade asset for the Blackhawks.

Chicago doesn't have to worry about money as much as some other teams, and the most expensive salary years in Jones' deal will have passed by the end of this season. Including signing bonuses, Jones is due to earn $10.5 million next season, $8 million in 2026-27, and $7.5 million for the final three years of this contract.

But, again, this isn't just a salary dump and it would require the Hawks getting a top young asset or two for them to make the deal. But, if Chicago can get off the contract and another team feels it's getting decent value on a reduced AAV for Jones, this could happen. And Jones could use a fresh start.

From everything I've gathered, Chicago has had legitimate talks with the Dallas Stars about Jones. We'll have a better understanding where it leads through the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Feels like foundation of deal is there

Jones (2-2.5M retained) to Stars
Dumba (1 yr left at $3.75M) to Hawks

Its likely the assets that come with Dumba that would be up in air

Stars 2026 1st seems safe ask from Hawks and likely a prospect or young player from Stars (Bourque?)

I still think you really try and move donato. he is a AVG 3rd liner and a good 4th liner. but we can fill those roles with younger players. slaggert and dach guttman reichel. we need top 6 even if the contract is double. donato. IE 4-5 at 3.5 compared to 5-6 at 7.

I just don't see the need to retain 8-10 million on Jones at this point. The future value of cap space has been greatly reduced with the anticipated jump of 10ish million per season for the next 3 years. Taking back a shit deal like Dumba helps massage the fit for the last 1/4er of this year post TDL and has Jones at a net cost of 5.75 for next season. The following year the cap will be 20 million higher than today and Jones should be the Stars problem and not ours when we are paying Bedard real money and hopefully had a prospect or 2 hit at a star level needing star money on a 2nd deal. A likely very late 1st and a(nother) smallish F is not what I am moving Jones for and I am not retaining that much on top of taking a negative contract to make it happen. I am not that desperate to move Jones and want fair value AND pieces that actually help to do it.

If Colorado puts Ritchie on the table with Manson and their '26 1st, I would give them Jones, Donato, and a '26 Isles 2nd .

But then, retain that much is not so bad if the cap goes up as predicted. So either way I am good with it. It is not going to hurt us much for 3-4 years and then not much at all with cap going up. Getting rid of Stan's selfish mistake would be nice. And I am fine with 3-3.5 depending on what the return is.

Exactly right....we should be done with the 2 year deals at double market cost for guys like Foligno because they are good teammates, leaders, mentors or whatever other nonsense label we want to try to but on guys like Donato or to "reach the cap floor". Donato is going to comanad 4-5 million as a UFA and I would rather commit 7-8 into Ehlers or Boeser and actually fill a top 6 need than a bottom 6 role that kids or cheap retreads should fill. Bottom 6 that are 30ish points (which is all Donato is when he is not on a next contract heater) players should be kids on ELC's trying to develop into more or a bargain bin vet.

I am not opposed to retaining to maximize a great return...Mavrick Borque and a late 1st is far from great for a 25 minute a game RHD that produces fairly well offensively.

I am fine if we trade (with a real purpose other than just dumping) or trading with retain for a goos return. I sense he would like to go somewhere to win rather than grind it out here.

Agree...I think the NMC is probably more like a 15 team no trade list at this point after 5 years of no playoffs and awful teams. I can;t see him turning down a trade to most legit playoff contenders.
