Speculation: Potential TDL adds we can get?

Babe, wake up! The arguing about Matheson era is back!

He was an absolute train wreck when he was here. I remember being vocal about that back in the day. The calculator's rushed him because of a 5 game sample size in the playoffs, and then old man Tallon gave him an 8 year contract because he said he wanted to be a Panther. And the Mike Kitchen thing, I don't know if that was confirmed or if I just assumed it was Matheson because he sucked lol.

Having said that, he appears to have found his game, is exactly what we're missing after Montour left, and we probably have better leadership than last time to prevent him from cracking.

Having said that, can't imagine Montreal trading him for the reasons kerrabria already said if they are in the hunt for a Wildcard spot.

target acquired..... MR Andersonnnn

In terms of the worst D related decisions, I’m torn between the Matheson saga versus protecting Petro over Marchy and Smith, or over just about anyone else for that matter.

I still contend someone like Keaton Ellerby was far worse than the brain farts Matheson had here. Then you had guys like Demers who was a FA bust from the get go and Kuba. Or Early Gudbranson who tried to hit people like it was NHL hits than play hockey.

And the added sting about Ellerby was we took him at 10th over Shattenkirk(14th) and McDonagh(12th) in the first.

When Matheson first got to Florida, he was doing pretty good. There was an incident, if I remember correctly, in Vancouver where he demolished a Canuck into the boards and was given a major penalty. After that he was never the same player in Florida.

It was against Pettersson. And yes, well remembered. It did seem to impact him mentally, and thus his game. I recall there being some serious online abuse/threats to him from Canucks fans.

So calling him the worst defenseman in franchise history is hyperbolic. He was good and certainly had potential. The incident happened. And he was never quite the same again with Florida. A change of scenery and time has helped, and he is obviously a top 4 Dman these days.

Some Nucklheads even wanted to kill his dog, iirc

Habs would most likely want more than Zito would give, anyway.

I wouldn't be against bringing Matheson back. I think he was put in a bad spot when he was here. And when the inevitable screw ups happened, he got more of the spotlight for his on a team full of them.
We have a tradition of not developing defensemen well. We put them in a situation they are not ready for, and when they don't develop right, we roast them for it.
I remember when Matheson was about to join the team, I wanted to shelter him And got heavy push back just for that. Just because had just had a little success at the World Championships, people thought it was an insult I guess, to want to shelter him.
Well, when he got here, he didn't get sheltered and began to struggle. And that lead to improper development. He could have been really good for this organization if developed properly. Which was the same story for many defensemen we drafted over the years. Let's not forget that the teams these defensemen play on when they first get here are a train wreck defensively as well. With no structure. Outside of anomalies, defensemen don't develop well in that environment (forwards and goalies too while we're at it).
Matheson has managed to become a decent defensemen, and would help with our d corp.
