Cap is going up a paltry million dollars to $82.5m

Are there any guys your team will have to trade away for cap reasons? (less interested in UFAs walking to be get paid more than they're worth, but feel free to discuss that as well).

One of Fiala/Dumba/Zuccarello will almost certainly have to be for Minnesota.

We could maybe stretch it for 1 more year if we were cool with letting Dumba/Fiala walk for nothing after 2022-23, or trade one of them at next year's TDL, which might be pretty tough to do depending on how the season is going.

Fiala would have 1 more RFA year left (needs contract).
Dumba would have 1 more year left at $6M and then UFA.
Zuccarello would have 2 more years left at $6M.

I think that it'll ultimately be Fiala as the odd man out.

From Avs perspective it already seems abundantly clear that Kadri will walk in UFA.

Sakic will probably try hard to re-sign Nichuskin and Kuemper. Burakovsky will be 50/50.

Other than that there are no guys who need to get moved for cap reasons, except maybe Compher or Erik Johnson if Sakic needs to engineer some big moves, though that seems unlikely.

Vegas is very close to the cap in 22-23 already with Roy and Hague not under contract. That's the big cap crunch team this Summer, maybe sooner.

Other clubs like Carolina and Colorado (because of MacKinnon's upcoming mega contract) will have to make tough choices as neither can afford to retain everyone, but a couple notable players on both are expiring as UFAs.

I thought they walked that back because of the lack of Canadian fans in buildings recently. Is it not staying flat at 81.5m?

Anyway, it seems likely one of Pacioretty, Karlsson or Martinez move in the offseason (if not sooner).

It's looking like the Oilers will lose one of Puljujarvi or Yamamoto, replaced internally with ELC contracts. At least they are both RFA, so the loss would include a trade return.

The team and fans now would say JP is staying if there is a choice, but JP may be more expensive. So it may not be a choice.

Dang, what happened to Yamamoto; that 26 in 27 just purely a mirage?

That line was on fire. Then he had a rough patch this year, maybe playing through injury. He's been improving lately. Tenacious on both sides of the puck and starting to get more chances

Yamamoto has done nothing to earn a payday. Zero chance Edmontont losses Puljujarvi.

Exactly. Puljujarvi will be expensive. Yamamoto will not be. Maybe we cant afford JP. I know it's easy to say just trade off Barrie or whatever but maybe Holland cant/wont do it

I believe it ultimately depends on how much revenue the NHL ends up generating. Still possible they will earn enough to push the cap up by $1m but I think they walked back the guarantee that it would go up

There are only three things certain in life: death, taxes, and Vegas having cap issues.

Ilya Mikhayev is unlikely to return to Toronto and will walk to UFA.

Leafs will likely keep Campbell and Mrazek gets dealt...some decent interest in him according to insiders recently but it's an off-season move.

Curious to see what happens with Dylan Strome...imagine Chicago still wants to recover an asset on him but the qualifying offer may be unappealing.

Caps, all are UFAs after 2022-23 except Sprong. The random opinions of one random schmoe.

Definitely may trade:
Hagelin, $2,750,000
Laviolette seems to love him, but that's a lot for this team to pay for a 3rd/4th liner who really only excels on the PK.

Could see them trading:
Sheary, $1,500,000
Good offensive depth, but if they need the money for a better goalie or forward, he'd be a relatively easy one to deal.

Would be surprised if they traded, but not impossible:
Eller, $3,500,000
Sprong, $725,000, Arbitration eligible RFA after 2021-22
Eller is a fantastic 3rd line center, but with McMichael up, they may opt to move Lars to free up that money.
Sprong, like Sheary, provides good depth offensively and he's dirt cheap for now, so while they may want to upgrade on him his cap hit won't make much of a dent in a cap crunch.

Would be very surprised if they traded, but if they're desperate:
Orlov, $5,100,000
He's a great defenseman, but he makes a good bit of money. If they don't think they'll be able to afford his next contract, the summer of 2022 may be the time to deal him. Losing him would have a significant negative impact on their D.

Roy from Vegas should be getting some interest. Not sure if they need to clear cap to activate Eichel but unless they can move out somebody substantial I can't see them having the room to sign him for next season.

Roy’s contract will be mild. There are much more effective ways to shed salary. The Knights need all the Roy’s and Whiteclouds they can find (and extend).

The Caps are not in cap trouble. Justin Schultz and Kempny are coming off the books.

Tampa probably loses 1 or 2 of Killorn, McDonagh, Cirelli, Sergachev, or Cernak. i'd put money on Killorn at the top of the list and then a tie between Sergy and McDonagh depending who they value more. could also see some of the bottom 6 being moved like PEB or Colton.

Not necessarily a cap casualty but, Boeser may very well be gone this summer. We have a lot of wingers and out of the bunch he would be the least effective at his potential price point

With Canadian teams freaking out about Omicron and going no fans for a spell, I bet the cap stays at $81.5mm. No $1mm bump next year.
