I get the Tallinder thing, but God help us if they really do send Volchenkov away.

I get that he might not be worth his contract, and that he was definitely exposed during the Florida series - the Atrain looked slightly derailed...

but the truth is that he has a skillset that none of our other Dmen own.

Salvador is ok at blocking shots, but Volch blocks them with his face. He takes hits to make a play like no other and that little message he sent the Flyers with his hip on that offsides play is much more valuable than people will admit. He has an edge and can hit - and really no one else on our squad can (or will) make the big hit.
(queue people who remember Greene's 2 big hits in 82+ games last year saying that he is a hitter...)

Volch clears the crease and plays a pretty solid game. I really don't want this guy out of the lineup.

As far as Fayne goes - a team needs guys that get paid peanuts and can contribute first-pairing minutes. I think you send the guys making 3+mil away first.

What I find funny, is that Gionta is one of the better hitters on this team and is also the smallest.

But yeah, I agree on the Volchenkov front. If he goes, I wouldn't be totally upset, but it's not like I want him gone. His contract doesn't handicap us cap-wise, and he brings so much in the defensive zone and on the penalty kill that he's invaluable.

Tallinder is expendable due to the style of play mimics Greene, Larsson, and Fayne, and to a lesser extent, Salvador. All those guys can replace what he brings or do what he does. I do not want to see Fayne go anywhere, he's a hell of a defenseman, so underrated.

The only way I'd be okay with Volchenkov is if the return was great, but it's not like his trade value is high.

Are the Oilers really set at D?

Fistric is the best of the bunch, and Whitney can move the puck, but their high point total for a Dman was 25 last year (Petry) and they are playing a rookie (Schulz)...

In the realm of the ridiculous - do you think Larsson+Tallinder would bring us back one of their top kids?

well schultz, as is well known, is the second coming of jesus and pronger. known in the hockey world as jonger. he also plays all 3 defensive pairings. id say theyre prob set on d.

lack of his style of play or not, the point is Tallinder is just flat out better than Volchenkov and on a much friendlier contract.

I'd much rather see Volch moved than Tallinder.

I wouldn't read into the Weiss thing too much. Florida is looking pretty depleted now, and Kovalev fooled them in training camp cause he's been bad. Although Anderson did just make a huge save on him just now. I can see Florida trading Shawn Michaels looking guy, but maybe as the season goes on.

They are set in the fact that right now, they are icing:

Whitney-J. Schultz
Smid-Petry
N. Schultz-Fistric
Sutton/Peckham

Like it or not, there is no room. They have their 7th D, they want the rookies to play so they aren't going to be sat. Tallinder's not that much of an upgrade of those guys for them to be interested in trading anything of serious value. He's definitely an upgrade over some, but it's just like the Flames trying to give us Bouwmeester. We don't need him and he's not that much better than our D to warrant us trading for him and giving up valuable assets that can go towards addressing our actual needs.

Trade Volchenkov? Our defense would be about as terrifying as Scott Gomez bringing the puck up the ice.

Trade the guy who needs to put duct tape around his ankles. (That is Tallinder)

At least one team needs him.

:laugh::laugh:

Funny guy

Larsson alone is too much

Benn is 23 years old and will be a 60+ pt player with the potential to be a consistent 75+ pt player. These guys are very valuable and as much as I love Larsson he is nowhere near the worth of a Jamie Benn.

I wonder if the plan is not to trade any Defenseman. It would be nice to have the luxury of not worrying about a injuries to the D-unit. Once a defenseman gets shaking up instead of rushing him back on the ice we can let them heal.

Yeah - that looks pretty set.

So, as far as teams looking for help... Here are last year's teams that gave up over 230 goals....

Chicago - upgraded with Rozival
Colorado - Zanon has awesome beard, but.. Has Shane Obrien been on every team?
Edmonton - see above
Anaheim - Souray is the addition here.

Lou might not deal with Eastern Conference...
Isles
Philly
Ott
Toronto - beat pens, lost to isles. panic ensues - dressing guys like Kotska.
Tampa - good upgrade with Carle, so...
Winnipeg
Carolina

I would love to get JVR from Toronto.

I wouldn't consider trading Larsson unless a bona fide first liner who's under 27 comes back our way. Also, I don't see Volchenkov as being all that important to our team. He's a one trick pony. He was brutal in the playoffs and we won despite him. His shot blocking isn't even THAT noticeable. I mean you can see it obviously, but it's not winning us games by any means. Get in better position and have a better stick so you don't have to block it with your face! I'd dump him and his contract in a heartbeat if we could package him with someone for a top 6 winger. Slot in the better player(Larsson) and the top 6 winger and we have a better team, clearly. Do it Lou, if you can.

Volchenkov was HUGE for the PK last year. Him and Sal normally start the PK and that is a huge reason why our PK was record setting last year.

Thats 1 key to losing Volchenkov that could be an issue. If he is hidden on a 3rd pairing (which he currently is) he is fine.

Aside from Larsson, we also have Urbom, Gelinas, Severson, Merrill in the minors.

Let alone Harrold.

Complete logjam. Which actually hurts our position, but given a trade would free up a spot for a young guy(Larsson or whomever) it makes the potential trade for a rental fwd all the more tenable.

Chicago- Too many NHL D, no room.
Coloraod- Need D, they have E. Johnson and then depth guys, but their strength is defensive prospects and goalie prospects. Bad trading partners.
Edmonton, I explained
Anaheim is in the same boat as Edmonton.

I'm going to do a breakdown of Western Conference teams the Devils could trade with after I finish watching something.

Keep them in the minors. Larsson will play once someone gets banged up which always happens to a D-Unit.

Zidlicky is probably not going to resign. Defensive dept is a great problem to have. We can give a lot time for our prospects to develop (play heavy minutes) in the minors instead of the NHL where wins are the most important thing.

Yeah, and the more highlights I see of Severson makes me think he might be the best of the bunch. Burlon is in the mix, and Hegelson might be the most sure thing NHLer of the group because of his style of play. Everyone forgets Reece Scarlett too.

I think Tallinder and Greene are the most easily replaced by all of those aforementioned guys, and they have the biggest contracts. I think Larsson or Harrold could step in for either and do a reasonable job.

I think Greene would be the hardest to replace. Fayne is by no means untouchable for a good return, but to me Greene is.

Greene is our most versatile DMan. if we had to pick a #1, it'd be him

no way is he the most easily replaced.
