And Skinner in a shootout is an auto-loss. Which IMO, does speak to his ability, at least somewhat.

The distortion on focus on the board so severe here that Drai was being blamed in the GDT thread for banging pucks off goal posts in a game he scored, and he just happens to be Rocket Richard again. Leon would seem to be the last one that should be blamed but..

Most of the club is snakebit.

Your first sentence was onto something and then your 2nd misses the target. The occams razor in this is that almost any other team has better goalies in net than we do. A point so freaking obvious in the bold it beggars belief how the conclusion isn't reached.

Trust me the Oilers don't get goalied in practice when shooter tutor Skinner is in net.

But other teams don't get "goalied" for every loss. Occam's razor would actually say that the Oilers offense plays down to their competition rather than every other mediocre goalie turning into Hasek when they play us.

I’m no Skinner fan but he wasn’t awful in regulation, the numbers bare that out. Shootout was a different story, he didn’t make a save.
McD brought nothing, Hyman invisible, Drai should have had more than one. Nuge was laughable all night. Arvidsson had one good shift where he threw a few hits. Didn’t even notice Henrique or Perry. Seems to be a flu bug going around according to most on here. Just because we outshot a pretender doesn’t mean we were good.

Lack of finish has been an issue all year long... tops in the league in shots per game... something like 20th in shooting percentage.

Despite the club having McD and Drai I wouldn't expect this roster to be shooting topten. In terms of overall scoring depth a lot of the depth we have are passed scoring, well past prime, and scoring is often the first thing to go. We had an outlier out of his mind scoring season from Hyman last year. That was never going to happen. J Skinner was never going to be scoring a ton here, or Arvid. Both of those players need either PP, regular usage and top usage to bag goals. They weren't going to be seeing first unit PP here.

Really Connor Brown is a complete nothing from a scoring pov. Podkolzin wasn't even coming in here with any kind of scoring resume. If anything his season has been a continuation of how awful he is finishing around the net. The postseason had us believe Janmark who hardly ever scored last season could somehow produce. On down the lineup other than the main hogs there isn't a ton of scoring here.

Still would expect the team to be a bit higher in scoring percentage but when you got guys like Arvid, J Skinner, Pods, and Connor Brown and Janmark pummeling the shot 5 down to nothing its outweighing even the effect Drai has on the metric. Without Drai I couldn't even imagine...

Viktor Arvidsson to me is the definition of a cardio merchant. Stapled to Leon and only 6 goals on the year. I’d like to see Skinner up in his place.

You can't have it both ways. If it's not OK to bring it up when it's bad, you can't use it to say he's good.

Again, he wasn't the problem tonight. I'm just annoyed with the people blaming the skaters. Lyon played well, a bit better than Skinner, like most nights.

To be fair...what exactly did Lyon have to deal with in the shootout?
2 very weak efforts and RNH couldnt even muster a SOG.

That to me illustrated something...one team which was very hungry for a win beared down...the other team not so much.

Maybe our expectations are too high. flu is going around the Oilers room, several of our players are sick. Possibly McD too and he wasn't really on tonight. None of us really know what its like. But I'm sure not gonna get on the greatest player in hockey because he has some lukewarm games.

The goalie was required to make a hard stop on the post. Skinner, no way he would've made that stop tight to the post. or the one on Mcd on the wrap in regulation which is one of the best clinical wraps you will ever see. That was an amazing stop. McD was robbed.

He came in with zero speed, he barely stickhandled… half heartedly feigned left before going the obvious side (where he was pointing from the halfwall in) and then didn’t raise the puck. Which is particularly odd given both Lyon and McD know that Lyon didn’t bite on the halfhearted feign… so that means he just couldn’t get it up.

It was not his best look, especially since the camera showed him still swearing at himself about his OT flub literally 10 seconds before he jumped on for his shootout “attempt”.

Everybody has bad nights but that was just poor execution stemming from his own negativity/lack of concentration = mental error.

The Oilers roster suggests that are our scoring isn't as deep as might have been thought. Theres a lot of pad and logo stuffers we have in the lineup. Arvid has been not great scoring EV for years. Connor Brown is a joke from a scoring pov. Janmark looks like a guy that can score 3 a year. Podkolzin is a finishing disaster. It isn't complete surprise that on some nights we're going to have no scroring down the lineup and the usual suspects can't get it done every night.

We probably need a lot more from Hyman and Nuge, really the only other two core forwards we got. But I'm not about to blame Hyman after his season and playoffs last year.

I don't think we play down necessarily. its that many of our forwards are so inept around the net it often comes down to the same players being required to be the gun slingers and easier for clubs to key on just a few notables. Of course teams usually play us hard.

It's kind of hilarious coming here and seeing the major doom and gloom - I took a contingent of about 10 people from my client at work to the game tonight.

Among them were mostly flames fans and two die hard red wings fans.

The discussion amongst them was largely that the Oilers were completely robbed tonight and it was clear that the Oilers were a better team. They spent basically all night between desperately cheering for the Oilers to lose more or less marveling at how deep the Oilers are and how we basically don't give up anything - which is scary as hell because well, we're the Oilers.

Like you I am not comfortable with a Pickard / Skinner combo heading into the playoffs but that doesnt mean I am going to jump on board with the posters who seem to invent new ways to slag Skinner.

Skinners game is coming around. I think that he needs a legit 1A/1B behind him. A player that can be a #1 for a short period of time if necessary and Pickard is not that player.

C'mon. For a not big goalie that was still hard to get to. We're using after the fact here and its McD and he can bring the puck wherever he likes or shoot. The goalie played him reasonably well and McD made his choice but with nothing obvious being available. McD tucked it just inside the post. I've seen lots of those go in during shootouts and you have to. Credit goalie at least for not biting on any feint on the play. He read the play and came over, and just in time.

But the stop in regulation on the McD wrap? That was 5 bells. about the quickest wrap I've seen. Somehow he got skate to it.

Lies, the Oilers can't score to save their lives, apparently. Just ignore that they're 6th best in the league at it.

At this stage of his career, Skinner is the 1B. He's not consistent enough to be a starter, but he can do it in a pinch.

It's on the organization not to be putting the kid in the position he's in, but he's not 1A in any good tandem. Maybe he will be, but he isn't yet.
