Its Stu Skinner. How much different would it be to just pull our goalie in the shootout?

Didn't make a move on either one, beaten like a rented mule on both.

All his fans will come out and say how great he was in this one. lol. As per usual opponent goalie better. Would like to see Skinner make either of those skate stops on McDavid.

I was even more concerned with the efforts from McDavid and Nuge in the shoot out. McDavid made no move and ran out of ice to even get a shot off. Nuge lost the puck and never even got a shot off. 2 attempts 0 shots on goal. That was the worst Oiler shoot out I can remember since Cogliano tripped over the blue line in his rookie season.
Hard to forget how that overtime ended with McDavid fumbling the puck away untouched on a 2 on 1 in the dying seconds. Skinner gives us plenty of opportunities to criticize him over the course of the season. Tonight wasn’t one of them. He was the only Oiler playing well after the first period when the rest of the team looked like they didn’t want to be there.

The advanced stats are certainly not defiinitive.

They have their place but they're certainly not everything.

The Oilers very frequently have trouble finishing. I'd be interested to know how many games they've won this year when getting 40+ shots. Feels like they score less when they shoot more.

Maybe our expectations are too high. flu is going around the Oilers room, several of our players are sick. Possibly McD too and he wasn't really on tonight. None of us really know what its like. But I'm sure not gonna get on the greatest player in hockey because he has some lukewarm games.

The goalie was required to make a hard stop on the post. Skinner, no way he would've made that stop tight to the post. or the one on Mcd on the wrap in regulation which is one of the best clinical wraps you will ever see. That was an amazing stop. McD was robbed.

It was a milquetoast attempt by a player who has many, many better tricks up his sleeve. Way too slow and when he was coming across there was only one place he could've gone with the shootout attempt.

But even then, it's the shootout. It's not really indicative of anything.

I suppose nobody thinks it's slightly strange that the Oilers get "goalied" for pretty much every loss from goalies who can't "goalie" other teams.

But it couldn't possibly be the shooters.

Your first sentence was onto something and then your 2nd misses the target. The occams razor in this is that almost any other team has better goalies in net than we do. A point so freaking obvious in the bold it beggars belief how the conclusion isn't reached.

Trust me the Oilers don't get goalied in practice when shooter tutor Skinner is in net.

The Oilers played OK, both goalies made 30+ saves, both teams whiffed on great chances to win. The Oilers lost the skill competition at the end of the game.

The team finished January with 10 wins after having a tough schedule. They hunted down Vegas and now sit in first place in the Pacific. Overall, the team remains in a good spot and sits among the group of Cup favorites.

Two of the Pickard losses the Oilers failed to score so that he's actually 13W-2L in games the Oilers actually score in. Pretty damned impressive.

We should inform the Panthers that game 1 didn't actually count since the Oilers didn't score in that game.

They didn’t play terrible, but it’s a situational thing. You’ve got a team on the ropes in the first and they’re taking bad penalties, you gotta bear down and put them away. Oilers didn’t do that, they got cute on the power play and then followed it up with a sloppy second defensible.

Detroit is a team desperate to make the playoffs and fighting for their lives this time of the year, when you get a team like that down early you can’t let them up, gotta keep kicking the shit out of them until they’re dead.

McD tucked it into the skate. It was a goal if the goalie doesn't get to that one. It was decent. McD looked tired. Like I said half the Oilers team have had the flu. Its definitely been going around the room for weeks.

McD wasn't sharp. I'm not saying otherwise but there could be many reasons why that is. He looked off. What he looked like on the bench, I'm wondering if he's sick.

By your own admission (or, insistance) Skinner is awful, so does him not saving it in you hypothetical in indication of...anything?

No. That's a deflection. And I like how you softened it up by talking about McDavid's maybe-illness before still insisting that the slow, telegraphed move was a "hard stop" - especially since it's all a pretty transparent attempt to downplay Skinner by over-selling McDavid's attempt and pumping Lyon's tires.

If only McDavid put that much effort into OT and the shootout.

Skinner let the Wings back in as per usual. Guy on one end makes a dozen stops to close the door. Skinner makes a few stops here and there and people are bowed down in prayer. lol the telecast in the third period theres a sequence where one Wing shot right into Skinners pad, the next shot missed the net, and Debrusk is hollering on for 5 mins about how those were two "really difficult saves" by Skinner. At another moment in the third they're saying the Oilers record the last two months is mainly due to Skinner. Which is lol fabrication.

So thats part of what gets me wound up. Every f***ing telecast these bozos are winding up Skinners next contract. Its like a trainwreck in slow motion.

I had to emphasize the bolded. That is spot on.

As this season wears on I am leaning to the theory that this team wont have that issue in the playoffs.
Its really what they are waiting for.

Oil played decent. Lyon was the better goalie. Skinner wasn't bad but not the better of the two.

Skinner needs to practice breakaway shots badly.

The in-game breakaway was deflected by Emberson and Skinner had stopped a breakaway 1min earlier… plus two huge saves on the Drai PK to keep it even.

In the shootout, yeah I mean… what are you gonna do… it’s 70:30 in favor of the shooter and to me that means if the shooter executes their move it’s in 90+% of the time.

Case in point if you fumble the puck and don’t shoot it at all, or if you are still fuming how you had the game on your stick in OT and don’t even put in a full effort on your shootout attempt… well then the goalies going to get 90+% of those right?

Not mentioning any names above of course, it’s a team game after all, but the Oilers completely handed this game to Detroit.

Right before he made many big saves when it mattered to save the team’s ass from getting nothing tonight.

You can't have it both ways. If it's not OK to bring it up when it's bad, you can't use it to say he's good.

Again, he wasn't the problem tonight. I'm just annoyed with the people blaming the skaters. Lyon played well, a bit better than Skinner, like most nights.

It's not Skinner's fault the team thinks a backup can be a starter, but that's the position he's in.
