Why does everyone bring up Andersen.
Yeah he wasn’t good for 2 years now. We all know that. Being better than him isn’t a high bar to achieve. Just because Carolina made a bad signing it doesn’t make Mrazek a good signing.
All those other guys you mentioned weren’t great last year but at least they are one year deals.
No one is taking that contract from us without a massive sweetener after he goes on one of his many cold streaks and cracks in the media pressure that comes with this market

His numbers are good. The contract is good value for a 1B guy. The contract is tradable if Campbell takes off this year and shows hes a real #1 and they need to pay him slightly more - because Mrazek will also likely be a more than capable player at the reasonable contract he signed today.

Otherwise Campbell falters or also proves hes a 1A/B tandem guy and then they can sign him for a similar or less than Mrazek makes - and they have Mrazek - not Brian Elliott or Martin Jones.

Goalies have proven to be quite unpredictable as a whole - allocating a reasonable amount and trying to run a tandem is the best bet unless you have Vasilevski/Helleybuck

The goaltending is better going into next season than last for cheaper. Pretty easy to justify this one honestly.

I might lower my grade. I just heard his presser.

He is now biting the hand that feeds him. Jonas Seigal who defends Dubas constantly asked him: "How does feel to work through free agency with little wiggle room on the cap?"

Kyle immediately goes into the defensive: "Actually we have a lot more wiggle room than previous years..."

What the f***? Does Kyle think we are stupid? More wiggle room?

Claiming "we're patiently waiting for the second wave of free agent players to sort through..."

Jesus Kyle. This is an arms race that you keep losing. This team looks worse on paper, and is now clinging to maybes and what ifs.

The only reason I'm not giving an F is because I think Mrasek is an OK signing.

Kyle,

You're on borrowed time.

Somewhere between a B and a C.... if on a numerical scale, I'd give him a 70-even.

The big move he made (Mrazek) was uninspiring, but necessary. Part of me wonders if he's actually any better than Rittch though.

The good...

-- I don't think he's going to regret any of them. They're all super low-risk.
-- The deals he made do have some upside -- Michael Bunting could be a top 6 forward for us, and David Kampf might end up being a really solid 3-4 centre.
-- There isn't really a competitive signing where it jumps out to me that "we should have gotten that guy".

The bad...

-- He hasn't really addressed many of his team's needs.
-- He hasn't shown much in the way of creativity, inspiration, or conviction in his moves.

So.. The same or slightly better in most areas. Depending on who else we add at LW this is still a top 5-8 team.

So say we use that 3.5 million

Matthews gets hurt with a day to day injury

Are we going to put him in the IR for the week or two minimum or ice a team that's not full?

We're being pretty non-chalant with roster size...

Having a minimum of one extra is a must imo. Sounds like that is something we are not interested in though

All sorts of "emergency callup" rules we've taken advantage of in the past and can again.

Oh yeah, let's grade him on a scale of how good/bad he can do on the available bottom-feeder type signings he backed himself into...

Automatic F.

Failure of a GM.

With 3.5 million dollars remaining, I think Dubas would be smart to trade Dermott unfortunately and replace him with someone like Gudbranson for a million dollars. That would give us 4 million to play with, maybe just enough to also sign Saad. A third pair of Sandin - Gudbranson isn’t so bad. Gives us a decent PKer as well. Aim to get two picks in return for Dermott, maybe a 2nd and a 4th? Helps restock some draft picks in the system.

From the land of 'I hope so's', and outside of today's actions, I'm curious to see how Mikheyev plays this year. His first year saw him score 8 goals and 23 points in 39 games. Last year, 7 and 17 in 54 while having many a look at improving those numbers, which he didn't capitalize on, as we know. I'm curious about his injury and how much it set him back, and whether it is something he can bounce back from. From the British Society for Surgery,
What is the outcome after nerve repair?

The result of a nerve injury depends on many variables as detailed above. Your Surgeon will be able to outline to you what you can expect. The important thing to remember is that nerves take many months to repair themselves. The nerve grows back at about 1mm per day. The final result may not be known for two years or more.

I don't think the Leafs have commented on this aspect of Mikheyev's injury and whether or not they believe last year's numbers have anything to do with Ilya having been compromised by the sliced nerves in his wrist. If he was, and if his recovery required more time to fully regain his strength and dexterity (an internal organization diagnosis by team doctors) might we see a bit more 'pop' to his game? I hope so.

I voted C

Bunting is a good addition but completely unproven. I rate him as a 3rd or 2nd LW. Most likely will be given a spot on #2.

Kampf is a decent bottom 6 centre, I'd rate him as a 4th that can move up if needed.

Mrazek's length is pretty bad but we needed a goalie as Campbell is not really dependable for much more then 45-55 games. Martin Jones might have made more sense on a 1 year.

I'm still hoping to get Nick Ritchie to get the 3rd or 4th line LW spot. Leaving Robertson 1 of the 2 remaining LW spots for trade. Mikheyev and Engvall must be dumped.

?????/ Robertson - Matthews - Marner
Bunting - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson/????? - Kerfoot - Spezza
?????/Ritchie - Kampf - Simmonds
Anderson

Defence I think pretty much looks like we have it now. They will go cheap then try to add a rental at deadline for the Bottom pair to pair with who ever wins it out of those 4.

3.5 million in cap space. Trade Dermott for a 2nd and a 4th. Trade Engvall for a 3rd if not a 4th and 5th. Restock some draft picks into the system. We now have 6.25 in cap space. Sign Saad to a 4x4 contract with a modified NTC and Gudbranson 2x1.5 per contract.

Kerfoot - Kampf - Mikheyev
