Another day, another top opposing center completely nullified as PLD added McDavid to his long list of victims this year in yesterdays beatdown. He's consistently matched up against top lines in tough zone starts and absolutely crushing those minutes. After a slow start offensively he's on pace for a career high 69 points as well.

There are a lot of legitimately great candidates this year, but how many voters will be willing to look past his reputation and put him in their top 3?

I agree that PK TOI should be factor, but if you look at Selke ballots, it inexplicably doesn't appear to be much of a consideration for many of the voters.
That's probably because playing on the PK isn't actually that linked with being a great defensive player, at least for forwards. Kyle Connor has been an adequate PKer in his career.

But PLD has no other argument for getting the Selke, so the fact that he also doesn't get a boost from playing on the PK.

I would argue that it should be. The PK is almost entirely a defensive effort. Getting takeaways, blocking shots, winning board battles, - it all adds up to PK% and goal prevention which is basically the definition of defense.

PLD has all the tools but doesn't care about hockey
PLD will never live up to his contract
PLD trade will be a disaster for WSH
PLD always looks good at first, just wait 40 games
PLD will never outplay elite opposition
<<You Are Here>>
PLD will never contribute deep in the playoffs
PLD will never win the Stanley Cup
PLD will never win the Conn Smythe

I don't think he'd be my first choice either, but he is taking the toughest assignments and - generally speaking - winning those match-ups. For the Capitals, it's one of their core reasons for success. The team went from a minus 40 goal differential to a plus 60. Clearly somebody is doing something right (and it is fair to point out other significant improvements like Chychrun, Protas, McMicheal, etc.).

I could also pretty easily single out some players who got Selke votes in the past who are about 1/1000th as deserving as PLD is this year.
