As of this moment the Wings are holding onto a playoff spot, one point ahead of Pens (2 games in hand) and a minute from being tied by the Devils with a chance to get another point.

This will be an ongoing watch (hopefully) all season and if they don't start playing better they will quickly (tomorrow?) be outside the playoffs. Even with the MTL godsend.

Devils are tied and we have game in hand. They are the main opponents along with Boston

They may win against Toronto which will put them ahead

Now tied with the Devils. Pens have W4 apparently so the odds of them passing in their 2 games in hand is very, very good. Luckily there is a small cushion between Carolina but they have been playing better than the Wings recently.

The boys have to start playing better here, Need to start winning some here at home PP still not looking good but at least we did add a couple this evening. Need to pretty much ride Mrazek the rest of the way to stand a chance.

I don't see Pit as competition. They are in as far as I'm concerned. The competition is Jersey, Philly, Islanders, Boston. 3 will get in, 2 will miss.

I think Philly will catch up quicker than some realize. L10 of 6-3-1 and that was before they just beat NSH I think.

Edit: Only 4 pts behind now, still 6-3-1, W3

So why do we want to make the playoffs? I'd understand if our core was young and would want them to get playoff experience as they develop.. But that isn't the case. Not even close, really.

Easily this, it's too late to tank. If we make it and flame out in the first round, we keep the streak alive (it means more then people think, it's not just a number but a driving factor for the players) and we pick what 15th,16th?

Or we miss, lose the streak, hear about it for the entire off season how the mighty Red Wings are done and we pick 13th, 14th.... I'll take making over missing, simple as that...

Unless your top 5, or top 10 pick missing playoffs is missed experience and in our case losing a historical streak in today's NHL simple as that. The streak is a staple but missing by a spot or two doesn't help us...

Beating Boston/Tampa is all we need to be concerned about and I think the Wings can do that. You can look at the other teams but to me that is really the only point of concern to date, finish third in the division and it doesn't matter what is happening in the other division.

That is really up to the individual I guess. I have no value judgment in my OP, just discussion of where the Wings are in the playoff picture at this moment.

I think the biggest thing about making the playoffs is the tradition. It's a big deal, younger players, free agents, traded players come here knowing "we don't miss playoffs". It's a draw and a drive. Players come in and they simply don't want to be part of the team that misses playoffs because it will be remembered. When it comes to history they will be the date at the end, no player wants to be that date.

Tradition matters, and making playoffs for the Red Wings is a tradition that draws players here and pushes players to compete. Look at a guy like Z the year we almost missed. He found he gas so he wasn't the captain that we failed under.

The streak is bigger then just a number.

I'd still rather make it as a wildcard, and lose in round 1, then just miss. The differenc in the draft would be 2 or 3 spots. We got Larky at 15 after making the playoffs, so after the consensus top 5-7 picks, its pretty much a crap shoot.

But if you do get in, you just never know.

Honestly, i'm ok making or missing the playoffs. I don't want to tank or anything, but it would be great to have a chance at the type of talent they haven't had a chance at in years.

Larkin and Mrazek are pretty young still, they probably have 1 or 2 more seasons in them before we should get rid of them to make room for the next wave of prospects.

Those two are currently the best players on the team. Can't feel too confident in the future when a rookie and sophomore goalie are the best players

I think you more mean near-future/present...

Having an all-star 19 year old be your best skater and a vezina caliber goalie in his second year actually speaks volumes to a bright future. Just need to get some of the other pieces built which obviously points to the back-end. But they have another couple star caliber players to build around, that also give off the big game big time player vibe we have won with before. Happy about that, not sure why we wouldn't be.

It will be interesting to see how the bounce back from the Florida trip. It is the turnovers right now that are killing this team in my opinion. They just need to make less of them and I still think they can clean up that area a decent amount. Not to a degree that would be exceptional, but to a degree it doesn't hurt us night in and night out.

I feel confident any time the team's best players are actually really, really good players. If 37 year old Datsyuk and 35 year old Z were unquestionably the team's best players still it would be cause for concern.
