Playoffs Positivity Thread

That’s what playoff hockey is, no? There’s nothing to fear that hockey already doesn’t bring imo. Play hard, take your licks and give them when you can but stick to your game plan. You don’t win without battling and getting bruised in the playoffs.

Not to pick on you friend, but this sentiment of physical fear is really starting to annoy me. This is playoff hockey and a lot of Habs have been getting run all season, they’re ready imo.

Yes, but even that has changed over time. Players will finish their checks with more regularity in the playoffs, but players no longer try to to run guys through the wall anymore on the forcheck... it used to be particularly bad for dmen.

I'm not sure exactly when it shifted, but I think the quenneville Hawks were a part of it. When they were having their success, quenneville was big on stick positions on the forcheck rather than just taking the body out.

I also recall dale weise talking about this when recalling his time in chicago.

This was a table I prepared on February 1st and posted in the Numbers forum:

Looking back at where teams were after 50 games this past season, in both the East and West, 7 of the top 8 teams ending up making the playoffs.

The only team to move up in the East was the Habs who were two points behind Columbus at that time and those two teams did come down to their last games to decide the second wild card spot.

In the West the Blues had an incredible late season run. From February 8th to April 5th, they got 40 of 46 possible points (19-2-1-1) to catch and pass the Flames.

Seems to show that it's pretty tough to make up ground later in the season, takes a great run like the Blues had or at least be very close to a playoff spot as the Habs were at the 50 game mark.
