Last night was the first game the Habs choked. Ottawa and Toronto – no big deal. Would've been nice to hand the Sens another beatdown, would've been nice to finish Toronto in OT, but can't win 'em all.

But last night they had the game and they let it slip away. Frustrating. On the other hand, let's note that the Habs have addressed their biggest weakness – terrible 1st periods. The last two games against Toronto and Chicago they've come out fast and strong, without the terrible breakdowns that saw them fall behind early so often. If there's a good sign, that would be it.

Oh – and I noticed a new player wearing #93. Whoever he is, the kid might have potential.

The team didn’t have a good 1st period, Ivan Demidov had a good 1st period. He masked them being lacklustre yet again.

Imagine going 6-1-2 down the stretch and your fans tell you you don’t deserve it. Come on guys.

That 6-1-2 stretch should be enough already unless CBJ went 6 regulation wins to finish the season, which they are in the process of doing (credit to them). They put the pressure on the Habs and yesterday they cracked a bit.

Flyers are a bit like Blackhawks, young guys, nothing to lose, at home, playing with absolutely 0 pressure. RW isn’t a given at all here.

Demidov was amazing, but he didn't score two unassisted goals. The team came out ahead, despite a stupid penalty near the end.
Yet again outshot. This time at home against the worst team in the NHL. They didn’t dominate like they should have. He did all of the work for the 1st goal.

It's moreso the fact that they've looked absolutely terrible for the last 5 games when they've meant the most. We did not deserve to win against Nashville or Detroit. The team played absolutely pathetic in both of those games and Dobes/Monty stole those 2 wins. Columbus is playing like a team that's hungry for the playoffs, meanwhile the Habs are playing like a team that just wants an early summer break.

Yes, they had a terrible schedule with loads of pressure though, fatigue is going to set in at some point.

I’m mostly disappointed by the vets on D. Matheson, Carrier should be a stabilizing presence in those moments, instead they are having their worst stretch at the worst possible moment.

Matheson has never been a stabilizing presence at any point in his career. It shouldn’t be a surprise.

Our biggest problem by far is not our offense but our defense

I'm fine with Carrier. Carrier is a role defenseman. He makes very little mistakes. They all deserve criticism but IMO him a little less. Hutson didn't have his best game but he's still amazing.

My real problem is with the 4 others. Struble looks like he's running like a chicken without a head... I love Guhle. I think he'll be a key component of this team, but he had a bad dumb game making bad decisions. Hopefully it was a one-off... Savard is having difficulty with speed. The rest of his game is not that bad. But he's really at the very end of the rope.

Then there's Matheson.... I think he's a net positive, but OMG are his brain cramps difficult to swallow. With that said, MSL doesn't have a choice to play him. He needs to go with what he has, but it's painfull to watch sometimes.

The same team that choked last night won six in a row last week without Demidov. They weren't going to win every game. The weekend losses were forgivable. Last night... not so much. My point stands – their 1st periods were better the last two games. It's a noticeable improvement.

It’s not a surprise. Still disappointing.

I mean, it’s no coincidence that out of 30 combinations that where used more then 5 minutes, the Matheson-Savard combination is the worse.

What?

I need whatever you're taking.

Good first period against Toronto?

We were outshot 10-2 and didn't register a single even strength shot on goal in the 1st period. I'm sorry, but we sucked against Toronto in the 1st lol

Well, the races are coming down to the last game of the season again.

Games today:

7 PM: Columbus @ Philadelphia
- Like Chicago, Flyers are playing hard & having fun. They're 5-3-2 in last 10 & and are slightly above .500 at home. Since kicking Torts to the curb, Flyers have actually gone 5-1-1 and have won their last 4 home games.

Columbus is still well below .500 on the road (13-23-4). They've gone 3-7-0 in their last 10 road games. With the exception of the Washington game on Sunday, the majority of their winning streak has been at home. The Caps out played Columbus on Sunday, but Lindgren has decided to shit the bed late for Washington, while Columbus got excellent net minding from Greaves.

A win in Philadelphia is definitely not a sure thing for Columbus. If the game is tied late, Columbus will have to strongly consider pulling the goalie like Philadelphia was forced to last season.

If this game goes to OT, Montreal clinches.

8 PM: Utah @ Blues - This is game 82 for St. Louis & they need to win this game in regulation to clinch. Anything other than a RW and Calgary can pass them in either points or RWs. Blues are an outstanding home team, but Utah is one of the better road teams in the league.

Utah is 6-2-2 in last 10, while Blues are 7-2-1.

8 PM: Anaheim @ Minnesota
- This is game 82 for Minnesota. They need 1 freaking point to clinch. Both teams are playing .500 in last 10. Ducks are 5-5 and are below .500 on the road, while Minnesota is 4-4-2 and is above .500 at home, but have one of the worst home records among playoff teams.

Anaheim has actually been a tough out lately. Minnesota could actually lose this one. They just need to get it to OT.

9 PM: Vegas @ Calgary - This is only game 81 for Calgary. The Blues & Wild games will end before this one does. Calgary could be eliminated mid-game. They'll want to win this one in regulation and then see where things stand for the last game of the season.

We of course would like anything else but an RW. We'll see what happens in the 2 earlier games. This one may not matter.

I assume you saw the game. Yeah, the shot count was ridiculous, but Montreal actually had more shot attempts than Toronto. Skating was fast, defence was tight, possession time and scoring chances were very good. Bottom line: Habs played well, they just couldn't hit the freaking net.

Again, this was a noticeable improvement from previous 1st periods when they came out flat and spent most of the period hemmed in their zone.
