People were claiming MTL was tired as an excuse for lacklustre efforts this weekend, im not sure how its going to be any better on Monday when its 3 in 4 nights or Wednesday with 4 in 6 nights

The crowd might need to carry them if they dont clinch tomorrow
Habs have been a completely different team at home - last change has been an enormous benefit to give Hutson & Suzuki line favorable matchups

Habs need 2pts anyway … anyhow

Isn’t it just 1 point? Otherwise how could we have clinched with a win against TO?
They needed a regulation win against TO. The tiebreaker for points is regulation wins, followed by regulation + OT wins. Habs easily win regulation + OT, but if Columbus wins their next two in regulation (and we only get 1 point) we will be tied in points and lose the RW tiebreaker.

You're correct, Habs only need 1 point to clinch their spot.

Here's the math:

- MTL have 88 pts with 29 RW and 37 ROW with 2 games remaining.
- CBJ have 85 pts with 27 RW and 32 ROW with 2 games remaining.

If MTL get 1 point in their remaining 2 games, they will finish with 89 pts and remaining at 29 RW and 37 ROW.
For CBJ to get to 89 pts, they will need to win both of their remaining games. If they win them in regulation, they will equal MTL at 29 RW each. However, the second tie-breaker is the ROW. Habs have 5 more ROWs and thus will qualify.

So basically, if MTL get 1 point, they clinch.

CBJ has 28 RW though. We need 2 points.

Interestingly, while Montreal needs 2 points to clinch, Columbus only needs 1 lost point to be eliminated.

A regulation win and OTL for Columbus gives them 88 pts., tied with Montreal. However, while both teams will then have identical 39 W and 29 RW, Montreal wins the tiebreaker with more ROW.

Our 'magic number' is 2. Columbus' magic number is 1.

I posted it in another thread before CBJ played Washington last night but I'll post an update here:

SCENARIOS:

Columbus needs minimum 4 points to make the playoffs over us (they must win out):

- If they win both games in regulation: we need 2 points (1 win or two OT losses) to clinch.
- If they win both games, but one of the games not in regulation: we need 1 point to clinch.
- If they drop any points at all for any sort of reason: they are out.

96.6%! Vs! 3.4%

Ah we would have the tie-break for ROW

Definitely don't want to face Tampa, they've dominated us in prior playoffs, Kuch, Point, Hedman and Vasil always find a way to take over and Cooper is a great coach.
Success against Toronto may or may not happen, maybe they learned something from our last playoff appearance.
Yes, I'd rather take our chances against Washington.
Getting in in the first place is the desire, the dance partner going in on may not be the preferred choice, but just getting in is the goal. Once in, it would be great to last a long time but sometimes it's just a quick in and out. Whatever happens it will be a good learning experience and who knows, maybe it will last a long time and that sure will be pleasurable.

Uh no

Uh no. They would have 89 points to Habs 88 if Habs lose out. Habs need 2 points next 2 games to clinch.

I was quoting a post saying if the Habs get one point they need Columbus to lose at least one of their final games. They don’t, if Montreal gets one point they just need one of the Columbus games to go to OT, even if they win it.

If CBJ wins 1 in regulation and 1 in OT/SO, MTL will only need 1 point.

In such a case, both MTL and CBJ would be at 89 pts. If CBJ only wins 1 in regulation and 1 in OT, then both MTL and CBJ would end with 89 pts and 29 RW. Habs have the second tie breaker, which is ROW. Habs now have 37 and CBJ have 32.
