Playoffs Positivity Thread

The Yzerplan failed so hard for numerous reasons.
1. They lacked an actual blueprint of a team profile (7/8 player profile)
2. The players they got for that profile are not good enough
3. Relative to 2, they never got high enough draft picks for an extended period of time. Highest is Raymond at 4 and they ended up tanking for picks closer to 10.
4. Infusing the team with vets and Ufa signings too early in the process.
5. Not having someone to oversee Yzerman like what Gorton does with Hughes

I'd actually be really peeved if I were a wings fan. They're stuck in no man's land. They're getting some good goalies soon. So their best hopes is being the next New York Islanders. Make the playoffs most years, hopefully win a round every so often but never be a contender
#1 Stevie Y wasn’t fortunate enough to be handed elite 1D & 1C to kickoff Det rebuild as he did in Tbay

I know some wings fans are coping with a good prospect base, and they do have some good peices, but I'm sure they were not expecting to get Larkin toiling around the 30 year old mark with no playoffs. They tried to Kickstart a few years ago when they began systematically adding veterans for a reason, and there's no way they made those moves with the intention to be playoff-less to this point.

To summarize this tweet in another way, Larkin has no playoff rounds to date, while the younger nick Suzuki seems poised to enter his 7th round of playoff hockey.
Their real rebuild core is Raymond, Seider and the in-coming kids.

But HuGo were "lucky", MB left a lots of young players and prospects with good NHL potential: Suzuki, Caufield, Guhle, Xhekaj, Struble, Romanov, Harris, Kapanen, Dobes. Then HuGo acquired prospects in the same age range: Dach, Newhook, Heineman, Barron. And got a couple of vets using some of them via trade too.

Drafting really got better in the last few years of the MB regime, or the Habs got luckier (or the pool has just been better the last few years). It made a big difference. Especially when all the kids start to have an impact in a few years span.

Tonight can determine if they still need 3 points.

DET vs. FLA
CBJ vs. BUF
NYI vs. NYR

If DET, CBJ & NYI lose in regulation, the magic number will be 1 point.

If they lose in OT/SO, the magic number is 2.

If any of them win, the magic number is still 3.

In the NYI/NYR game, if NYR lose in regulation, they're eliminated. But tonight, we should want an NYR regulation win because then we'll only need 1 point to eliminate both New York teams.
1-1-1 seems about right for these three games.

The difference between the Red Wings and the Habs is that when Yzerman was hired in Detroit, he didn't have a base to work with. I think the only one he inherited of any impact is Larkin. The Seiders, Raymonds, Kaspers, Edvinssons, as well as prospects like Sandin-Pellika, Augustine, and Danielson, he had to draft them.

We can say all we want about MB, he didn't leave the team empty handed so when HuGo were hired, they already had a base to build on (Suzuki, Caufield, Guhle, Struble, Dobes, Monty + prospects who were in junior and college who were doing well at their level like Tuch, Farrell, Kapanen, and Mailloux to name just them).

Habibi, Montreal and Ottawa have had a similar kind of season and now both can finally be back in the playoffs. I hate the Sens but I'm happy for Sens fans, they deserve it.
Never counts the Habs! Until the season is over.

I'm not happy for Tkachuk tho. I want to see rhis loser lose lol.

Florida's been bad, Buffalo's been really good. I think we're Rangers fans tonight as well because if they win it sets up another team to be eliminated with a point.

Feels weird we're not playing on a Thursday.

Isles and Jackets can only get to 89 points....which, with 1 more win the Habs will accomplish also.
Then the ROW would be the tie breaker...which the Wings could potentially tie the Canadiens with. Not sure which tie breaker is next, but the Canadiens have a better goal differential to this point.

Good points.............Bergevin was deeply flawed, and his philosophy was flawed, but the cupboard was not bare when he left, there were pieces left, we just needed someone who could plan a rebuild, and HuGo were the TWO guys who get credit for stripping it down somewhat, and rebuilding and drafting the proper way, with a plan...........
Stevie Y always wanted back in Detroit, but should have stayed in Tbay to win his 2 Cups.......

Bergevin was always committed to building around price and Weber but he did make an effort to replenish the prospect pool to a certain extent.... this is true.

Suzuki and caufield were obviously the big ones, but I think he made the Suzuki deal with one eye on the present as he did grab tatar in his prime as well.

Caufiled was just a good mid 1st round pick.

I don't think it's a flat out failure. It's probably delayed on arrival, and I'm sure they wanted to integrate Larkin's window better with the team's progression, but in general, it seems like the path is still right.

Caufiled was just a good mid 1st round pick.

He didn't even want Caufield. He wanted to trade the pick and Timmins refused. Churla, Lapointe and Timmins were all saying "we pick Caufield". There's a draft video that shows this clearly.

AFAIAC, our cupboard when HuGo took over was all Timmins, Churla & Lapointe. Bergevin was sidelined in his last few years at the draft.

I get that and I argue that a lot (the retool between 2018-2020) but that just means he had a different type of rebuild to do and he failed at it. HuGo came in pretty much at the beginning of 2022. It took them 2-3 years to get to a point where the rebuild looks done soon. They can start looking at outside acquisitions now (2C Trade, etc). Yzerman became GM in 2019. That's 6 years ago. He only had 1 proper tank year, never stockpiled high end talent, and started integrating vet pieces way too early. It's like what the leafs did with Tavares before they rounded out their roster and restocked their pipeline.

The habs should not be the standard for future rebuilds as it was pretty unconventional but they definitely aren't following the proper rebuild requirements

That was my thinking. A rangers win tomorrow (unlikely), Buffalo and Florida. If we beat the Sens, it would mean a lot of players could get some much needed rest.
Also Demidov could play vs Toronto without any pressure.
