Yall can thank that Huston lad for even making it remotely possible to be in such a position, thank your lucky stars.
This season is a spoonful of medecine (IF) they can pull off WC2.
1- playoff experience
2- belief in achieving a goal, even when once it last place
3- Hutson winning Calder
4- Suzuki getting top 10 points
5- getting Flames pick ~11-15

Regardless if they beat WSH, it will be a much more fun off-season, especially at the draft table.

Teams only do that in the last 1-2 games.
Most good teams also still have things to fight for in the remaining games. For example, getting home-ice advantage or winning the division.
The playoff Metropolitan division teams (caps, canes, devils) are the only teams who are unlikely to change in the standings from now till the end.

Regardless of whether the stars are resting or not, you still see some whacky results down the stretch drive every year. It's not just about whether the star players are resting, it's about the overall mindset.

For certain teams, playing out the string in anticipation for the playoffs is more susceptible to a pre season kind of performance rather than the kind of performance that got them to where they are today.

The risk for something like this occurring is higher with a team like Ottawa, or Washington who are likely not moving one way or the other, but the top 3 in the atlantic probably still have their eye on the ball because they still have so much to play for.

The caps just dropped a couple in a row in regulation to minny and Buffalo. Infact, they gave up 8 goals to Buffalo.

Ottawa has also lost two in a row to Buffalo and Pittsburgh.

That has minor importance. It's not something that changes the scales.

You look at the last 10 games of the top/worst 10 teams last season:

Not a single top 10 team played below .500 hockey to finish the season. Most of them had great records in the L10 to finish the season.

Out of the 20 teams that finish bottom 10 in the last 2 years, only 3 of them had a .500 record or better in the L10.
Really interesting, thanks for pulling this together! Maybe also part of the reason the bottom teams continue to play poorly is that they also start giving more ice time to their younger players for experience (when mistakes aren't going to sting as much) after selling at the TDL, which also allows their tank to finish strongly ("winning games only helps so much", like Hughes told Marty).

I was sure that the Islanders would be fighting for WC2, but looks like they ran out of steam faster than everyone else....

Habs: 8 games left, max at 95...at current p% ~88
Jackets: 9 games left, max at 95...at current p% ~86
Rangers: 8 games left, max at 93
Detroit: 8 games left, max at 91
Isles: 8 games left, max at 90

Not even worth calculating the others. Jackets and Habs have been playing for .500 for the last ~2 weeks, which is the best out of all those teams...

Tryin’ to smoke on a Rangers pacc tonight

I had factored him in when I was prognosticating on this season. He’s a big reason why I thought we’d get between 85-90 points.

I didn’t think that would be good enough to make the playoffs though. Amazing that 89 points might get us in.
