If we are lucky NYI , CBJ, and NYR all lose in regulation tomorrow afternoon and then we would just need an OTL to clinch.
We won't need a single point if that happens. Isles, NYR and Detroit have a magic number of 1, so an OT/SO loss and they are eliminated. Jackets magic number is 3, but in the event they lose in regulation or we win in regulation, then they are eliminated.

Detroit doesn't play tomorrow. My point was that if both NY teams and CBJ lose in the afternoon then we need 1 pt to clinch on Saturday.

No we don't need one point if Columbus loses in regulation (same if we win in regulation), their magic number goes from 3 to zero because they won't be able to catch up on RWs and we move on even if tied in points.

I added Detroit because they are among the 3 teams with a magic number of 1, with the two NY teams, and if we get simply 1 point, they are all eliminated except for columbus.

Sheesh, we are saying the same thing !

If CBJ and both NY teams lose in regulation Saturday afternoon they will be all eliminated but not Detroit so if we want to clinch tomorrow we would then need 1 point against the Leafs.

Habs won't clinch on their own, they'll only clinch if/once the other teams lose.

Yeah the 14-6-3 in the last 23 games has nothing to do with them clinching. They're just falling ass backwards into playoff spot.. Undeserving losers! Ugh it makes me so angry! I just wanna punch Marty in his stupid face!

We will clinch in Mtl. It is fitting that we do. Crowd has earned this pleasure.
I personally suspect they won't make it past 88-89 pts. It's been the same pattern since December, top 3 team on the league for a few weeks and then they start to look like they have no more energy and it is goaltending that is winning games...and then the goalies crack too and they faceplant into a losing streak and return to a bottom 3 worst team in the league for a little while.

They are overachieving, there isn't enough talent and endurance on the roster for the 82 games grind.

NHL fake drama. Probably asked us to wait til game 81-82 to clinch.

They'll lose again tonight. Isles/Rags will eliminate themselves, then Washington will eliminate Columbus in their home and home. Any team losing one regulation game is eliminated.

We're already in, just focus on preparing for Washington as 1st and 8th seeds are set in stone. Three teams can win the Atlantic and Ottawa and Florida could technically swap places. We're not catching 5 points on Ottawa to move to WC2 in 3 games.

Just start creating a plan specifically for Washington and try out some new stuff in Chicago. It's almost better to just lose the rest of the way so we can guarantee the highest playoff team pick. Don't want to pass the Devils. We're not getting home ice in any round regardless and facing the Devils in the conference finals is basically not going to happen as they suck. Unfortunately Calgary's pick is certainly going to be 16th, but we'll hold two picks back to back if we don't make a run.

Just a few players who went 16-17 in the past couple decades:
16: Leddy,
Tarasenko,
Armia,
Wilson,
Zadorov,
Barzal,
Chrychun,
Newhook,
Guhle.
Go back even further you have the GOAT Hossa, Marcel Hossa. Actually this is a pretty legit list. I guess 16 is usually around the point the guys who were supposed to be top 5 but have questions get drafted. Like almost everyone here was a faller and then lived up to their pre-draft hype. Except Armia; except for random World Championship tournaments and individual Mario Armia games.

17: Beaulieu, Gardiner,
Rundblad (traded for Tarasenko pick :sarcasm: ),
Hertl,
Sanheim,
Connor,
Fabbro,
ASP.
Got a lot of historic Habs picks at this number too,
Brent Bilodeau and his 0 career games,
Andrew Cassels, later traded for the pick for the GOAT Bure, Valeri Bure.
Alfie Turcotte, better than the Turcotte who went 5th overall recently.
Dave Hunter, who we held the NHL rights to and yet the WHA Oilers were allowed to retain him upon league entry, whatsupwiththat? (any historians care to chime in, I thought Gretz was the only one they were allowed to keep).
Glen Goldupp, enough said; hugely important 70's dynasty member--for 18 regular season games across three years; kind of the aaron palushaj of his day.
Jude Drouin, take a bad player and make him better. One of the first "future considerations trades" as Montreal traded him for "a player to be named later" which ended up being Bill collins, Was this a Sam Pollock make Minnesota better to get a better draft pick from someone in their division thing? Drouin was actually productive. Anyone Montreal were unlucky with Drouin's, good thing they never got another one.

So 17 was actually a lot more hit or miss. I guess because it's the cutoff point for playoff teams, and previously was only playoff teams as well. I would guess fringe wildcard/lower seed teams had different drafting philosophies than teams that missed entirely

But don't get too excited seeing Connor and Barzal though cause teams as dumb as Boston don't exist anymore. . . or do they?

off topic: this also led me into supplemental drafts, how did John Cullen's rights get drafted by Buffalo only for him to sign with Pittsburgh a couple years later only for the Pens to flip him for Ron Francis? Seems like Buffalo getting f***ed goes back further than I thought.

Anyways, we gonna make the playoffs without getting another point. We have a higher chance of winning the cup than missing the playoffs at this point. We have a higher chance of me winning a prize that isn't 2 dollars or a free play from a lotto max ticket.

We are desperate for that post season to be clinched. So getting hyper. Expected a loss in Ottawa and expect one in Toronto guys. Back to back away games against a hot team and now a top team. I just want the boys to show up at minimum and give themselves a chance. Was a real sloppy game in front of our net. And i want Xhekaj and Dobes in.

Which will be enough and which is fine. I was expecting 84 points. They’ve surpassed that. I’m happy. They will probably make it now. That’s an added bonus. This squad is FAR from being complete.

BTW, the Monday game is in Mtl, not Chicago. Could be the clincher. With Demidov joining the lineup. Montreal fans have earned the clincher.

Amen.

This fanbase is so fragile. The team is in the position they are in because they just had a 6 game winning streak. I swear people legitimately think they are going to win every game.

The Habs have earned themselves this position and have breathing room because of their play since 4 nations.

Would I like to see that x - Montreal already? Sure, but looking at the big picture, it's going to happen.

And I don't expect the Habs to win tonight either...

Sounds more like inconsistency than overachieving. Habs played great hockey through most of the season and fully earned every point. The problem – as we all know – is they skid into these 10-day slumps that give back some of the gains they made. The only thing separating us from the next tier of playoff teams is maturity (a little more talent wouldn't hurt, either).
