The Habs are only 5 points out of a wild card spot. They got off to a slow start, but with the emergence of Laine, does this team have what it takes to sneak into the playoffs?

I'm all for "Tanking" and "the Tank", but let's explore the other side of the coin. Playoff experience is extremely valuable for a young team. It's all out of our control anyways, I'll be content either way.

Habs are close, but they need to string together a couple of winning streaks and that's not easy for them to do

Gonna be exciting to watch moving forward. It will be a tight race, parity is high this season.
I think Boston will start pulling away with that 3rd place in our Division and the wild card spot is definitely going to a team in the Met.
The GF/GA in our conference is starting to show where the demarcation line is.
We are definitely close to being in the mix but it's a nowhere land truth be told.
It's going to get crazy towards TDL as there is so much parity amongst the (Bad) teams. o_O

First year that I’d legit want them to squeeze into the playoffs instead of tank. But a realistic best expectations for me is having a very loose interpretation of « in da mix ». Just enough to say we’re not only spinning our wheels.

My prediction here prior to start of season was Habs would be battling for last wildcard spot into April and I’ll stick to it - barring significant injuries of course

Making the playoffs means Suzuki and Caufield continue their performance and:
  • Slaf wakes up again and plays like he did last year
  • Guhle scores more and takes lead as a defender
  • Hutson doesn't slow down or hit the wall as the season wears on
  • Dach stops looking lazy and stops (non-)performing as a black hole
  • Newhook produces more than at a sub 20pt/season pace
  • The goalies improve to just a notch below average
  • The team plays serious hockey
I'm all for it OP. It would be great to see and more encouraging than simply getting another topX pick who is not going to be the next McDavid anyway.

They just need to string more than 2 wins in a row more than once. It's been a real challenge since Suzuki joined the team (I do not blame him for it, it's just how the timeline goes).

The last time the Habs had a 6+ games win streaks was in 2016-2017...

Habs should be able to win 5 of next 8GP minimum, which would put them in the thick of things

Positively not making the playoffs.
Positively this team wasn't ready for nhl season.
Laine will have a limited impact. Habs will meet tougher teams than Isld and Nashv.

They have easy teams to meet in december but they will lose a lot when they'll meet big teams in jan-feb-mar.

What about other teams racking up pts early in the season winning against easy teams / weak schedules - Canes, Make Beliefs, Bruins, NYR…
These teams are way more already built and have continuity we don't have. They might have few players injured or slowing down but they have depth and experience. They play in a system that works. No new experience for them. Just my opinion, you are free to disagree. ;)

IMO there’s this belief there are some 5-8 dominant teams in Eastern Conf… there isn’t - even traditional Atlantic division powerhouses are transitioning into weaker teams as they age (TBay, Bruins).

I expect second half of this season to be wide open with surprises sneaking into playoffs

I disagree vehemently - I think it’s 50/50 at best TBay or Boston make playoffs this year based on what I’ve seen of their play

Most of them like the Bruins are crap.

If Dach turns it around, Slaf continues to improve, Laine’s adrenaline doesn’t wear off and we stay healthy then it’s possible I think.

A lot depends on that 2nd line. If our D keeps up with this new found composure too.

If we’re past the 2 steps forward one step back progress with our kids and can experience something more reliably linear then we could be in business
