Playoff Ullmark

Ottawa is young, first time in the playoffs...it to be expected.

Not like they've been blown out, hope they get at least one game though

Sens fans throwing Ullmark under the bus as if they haven't been complete dog shit defensively and on faceoffs

Cut the guy some slack, there was like 4 or 5 goals scored against him directly off of offensive zone faceoff wins. On the OT goal, Matthews wins the draw and him and Knies immediately screen the goalie. Where is the D ? How do you lose that many faceoffs cleanly ? lol

Ullmark isn't the problem

1) Horrible PK
2) Horrible on faceoffs
3) Can't clear the crease

Not the primary problem.

The team's defensive system, from turnovers (17 tonight?) to breakdowns leading to odd-man rushes or open shooters in the slot, are a much bigger issue.

Honestly he's been pretty good. Game 1 had some softies but 2 and 3 he's been solid.

Plus he was a huge difference maker for Ottawa this year.

I like Ullmark.

Not gonna lie, as an outsider looking in… this Ullmark contract feels like Ottawa tryna cosplay as a contender before they’re ready. Four years at $8.25M AAV? For a guy who peaked in Boston’s defensive cheat code system? That’s bold.

Sure, the Vezina season was unreal, but let’s not act like he’s been that guy since. The moment he had to play behind a less polished team, his numbers dropped to earth. This year in Ottawa? Around a .910 SV%, and the advanced stats show he’s not stealing games — he’s just… there. That’s fine. But not $8M+ fine.

Oh, and he’s got the full no-move clause. So if things go south, he’s not waiving to help you out. Add in the fact Ottawa’s still paying part of Korpisalo’s salary just to get rid of him and you're now dedicating over $9M to the position. All while still trying to build out a full D-core and pay the rest of that young forward group.

And let’s be real — when have these big goalie deals worked out? Bobrovsky, Binnington, Price, even your own Murray saga. That’s a bingo card of pain right there.

If Ullmark holds up and posts .920+ seasons into his mid-30s, it might work. But if he slips, gets hurt, or just stays average? That deal’s gonna look rough fast. Like… “HFBoards thread with 7 pages of cope” rough.

You realize a .910SV% is 8th in the NHL for goalies that have played more than 30 games, right? The league average nowadays is .900.. .010 above the average is pretty good goaltending. And his salary is tied for 5th highest in the league with 3 others.

Goaltending was Ottawa’s biggest weakness the prior 2 seasons. Going out and adding some stability to the crease is the biggest reason they made the playoffs. Going out and getting Ullmark and signing him wasn’t trying to ‘cosplay as contenders’ it was addressing the biggest need the team had.

I’m not sure what advanced stats suggested Ullmark wasn’t stealing games this season, but Mike Kelly posted on April 4th that Ullmark was second in the league in steals (when a goalies GSAA is higher than the goal differential). He absolutely stole quite a few games for the Sens, most notably the Wings game and the Lightning game down the stretch.

You’re right about the PK and faceoffs but this team is going to have defensive breakdowns playing against a team with that kind of offence, it’s not realistic to think otherwise. A lower seed rarely beats a favourite without having the best goalie of the series. Unfortunately I think the sample size of Ullmark in the playoffs is big enough at this point.

I was thrilled when we got him because we just needed to make the playoffs and he’s great in the season, but that contract is rough now if you have further aspirations. It’s not very assuring heading into a game knowing your goalie has virtually no chance of putting up a .900 save percentage in an important game.

The team hasn’t been good, but Game 2 and 3 were winnable games and he let in some questionable ones (Matthews tonight and Domi in Game 2). It sucks because he’s such a likeable person but Jesus something just shuts off for him in the playoffs.

Sens fans found their whipping boy - their team just sucks really bad though

I guess Toronto isn't much better since this broken Sens team has taken them to OT two games in a row now 🤔

Ullmark isn't playing good enough for the Sens to win(he has yet to post a sv% over .857), but he's only one of multiple problems with the Sens these playoffs so far.

Pardon my ignorance, but do the Sens even make the playoffs if they don't get Ullmark?
He was great in the regular season, .922 since December when we started winning. The question is if 8.25 mil is good for someone who can only perform like that during the season.

We have Merilainen who saved our season when Ullmark was hurt and will be the backup next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ullmark isn’t even our clear-cut starter next year.

If I’m Green, Merilainen starts on Saturday.

Toronto has been better, but anyone who says Ottawa is the worst team in the playoffs is out to lunch. The Habs and Blues had zero business against the Caps and Jets if not for goaltending for the first two games. And unlike the Leafs who only have depth players injured, Jets and Caps have suffered top line and 2nd pairing Dmen injuries. Congrats to the Blues for taking advantage of a sieve Hellebuyck and Jets missing their top RHD tonight, but yeah. The fact of the matter is Stolarz has severely outplayed Ullmark, whereas Montembeault has only been marginally worse at most than Thompson and Hellebuyck has no business being in the same caliber as Binnington currently.
