His ES scoring was way down. He largely (but not quite) made up the difference with PP scoring. If you think he was the same player, fine. I don't. Not even close. Are you talking about the same Panarin that put up 96 points in 75 games or a different Panarin?
Funny how the ones who put up tons of points are constantly open to criticism while plugs who almost never score are praised,His ES scoring was way down. He largely (but not quite) made up the difference with PP scoring. If you think he was the same player, fine. I don't. Not even close.
Thanks to the cap, each roster necessarily has plugs that don’t score. Team success is about everyone doing their job. The expensive top six guys don’t get a pass for simply outscoring the cheap bottom six guys.Funny how the ones who put up tons of points are constantly open to criticism while plugs who almost never score are praised.
So some others have seen that. When he got pulled from the reg season game for concussion protocol I said, "but he always squints and blinks" and the reaction here was "WTF"?no, just wondering in general.
I’m not the slightest worried about Panarin moving forward. He is the type of player who plays with a chip on his shoulder and has something to prove. I expect that he feels his play was inadequate, judging from his comments. In between all the joking, he said he is grateful for the opportunity to play in the playoffs but he wasn’t good enough and will be better. I believe him.Funny how the ones who put up tons of points are constantly open to criticism while plugs who almost never score are praised,
Put two good forwards with Panarin and he's a top 5 scorer in the league. Even without that he's about a top 10 scorer. He's also easily the best passing forward on the team.
He put up 15 points more than the 2nd highest scorer on the team.
He led the team in even-strength points.
Despite his clearly being hurt in the playoffs, he put up 16 in 20.
Is he perfect? No. Is any player? No.
And some people fawn all over players like Kakko and Reaves.
Kakko may become great, but so far, even when his linemates get points, he can't. Playing Hunt over him made little sense, but there's probably a story behind that. Some here acted like McDavid had been scratched despite Kakko doing next to nothing in the playoffs.
Reaves was one of the absolute worst Rangers this season, yet some still believe he serves a function because he smiles menacingly at opponents.

But it’s not enough to just look at his points and give him the 3rd star of the game. He had over 40 giveaways these playoffs. He wasn’t very good. Panarin is so talented that he can contribute points even when his game off but once Cirelli shut down Zibanejad’s line, we needed Panarin to take his game to another level and he failed to do it. I think he’ll be better next playoffs.
Nothing will ever be clear for you.Things just got clearer.
He was an 80 point player when we signed him... The 90-100 point seasons we were getting from him were actually above expectations. With that being said, he does need to be better in the playoffs than he was. I truly think he was nursing something, or if he wasn't, that he knows he wasn't good and needs to be better. I think he didn't have a good off-season last year and came to camp not in the top shape. I expect him to come back next season showing that he is better than what we saw.I love Art, but I've been praying to see a report that he was banged up since end of regular season. Honestly, the guy was horse shit every single playoff games. He had glimpses of his elite skill, but what was concerning is he worked his balls off, and was still completely in effective playing Spring puck. That or maybe there is a steep decline coming out of nowhere?
It's really hard to pin down but it's beyond concerning for me. If he becomes even a 80 point PP specialist on the 2nd line, not driving that line, that is a concern.

Thank you. The plugs have a job to do. If they do their job, that’s good enough, if they produce above the average for their role, even better. The guys who make 10M+ are relied upon not just to compile points but be difference makers and take over or break open games. Artemi has stopped doing that over the past year plus. He’s being criticized relative to the role he’s paid to play. Everyone knows how good Panarin is. The trouble is he hasn’t been playing the same hockey that he played in his first season in NY - he was a puck hound year one, he attacked the net, he ripped one timers, he was an all around threat. He is becoming a much less impactful player, despite good totals. Thanks to the cap, each roster necessarily has plugs that don’t score. Team success is about everyone doing their job. Also, this board was foaming at the mouth about Reaves, Rooney and McKegg, because they don’t even serve their basic fourth line function of shutdown defense. Goodrow and Motte did, which is why they are praised.

I agree with everything you are seeing. I'm sure injuries had a factor in our our top players inability to perform.I’m not the slightest worried about Panarin moving forward. Hard to follow up on LD's response as it's spot on. It's a weird year for Art and I'm hoping it's fools gold. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I was at 4 games this post season. He looked very bad in all of them. And he scored the Game 7 winner right in front of me. I don't think analytics are be-all-end-all although they help tell a story. And I do believe in the eye test a bit. Both have their merits. But I will tell you this, the one thing I know about any chart that rates Art as one of our best playoff players? It's bad data.He was an 80 point player when we signed him... The 90-100 point seasons we were getting from him were actually above expectations. Panarin will also be 31 next season. His best may very well be behind him and this is the way it will continue to go.His first year here he had 95 in 70 and was 1st in the NHL in 5v5 production. This year he put up 96 in 75, but was 18th in 5v5 production. Prior to this year, he has never been outside of the top 10 in 5v5 scoring. His career has been:
9th CHI
5th CHI
7th CBJ
5th CBJ
1st NYR
10th NYR
18th NYR
He can bounce back but his trajectory is leaning more and more on the PP to produce and less on being the game breaker we saw in year 1.
Panarin will also be 31 next season. His best may very well be behind him and this is the way it will continue to go.
I think it's fair to say, he did all that in a bad season by his standards. Just based on the eye test, he wasn't the same player as previous years. Was he still able to make the most of a subpar season by his standards? Yes.Funny how the ones who put up tons of points are constantly open to criticism while plugs who almost never score are praised,

Does he deserve to be making Connor McDavid money on this team if this is how he's going to continue playing? No way in hell.
Again, I give him a pass - the entire team struggled 5v5, and he's allowed a bad year.
He was such a wizard that year. Just mindbogglingly good. It seemed like every time he was on the ice he did something special.Panarin was 56th in the NHL in 5v5 goal differential this year. He was 53rd last year. His first year here he was 1st in the NHL.

This all sounds right. Disappointed that Panarin and Copp are apparently fine health wise—I would have expected more from them in the playoffs.Vince said Strome has been battling that injury since a March game vs. the Sabres, says Goodrow took another shot to the same ankle on the same spot early in the TB series and that Motte wasn’t near 100%.
Kakko might become good, but if your 5v5 is great and you are a 25 point player, that counts as good? If your 5v5 is slightly worse and you pot 90 points, you're a slug? Not for 12m he isn't. I mean it happened and there's nothing to do about it but the team needed him for the cup push and he wasn't there. Since he is without a doubt THE offensive core player it's a huge opportunity missed for the team and entire organization. Meanwhile Kakko, an easy target, gets shit yet him and Chytil were the team's most creative duo 5v5.
Motte might be 100% when he starts any season. Might.Vince said Strome has been battling that injury since a March game vs. the Sabres, says Goodrow took another shot to the same ankle on the same spot early in the TB series and that Motte wasn’t near 100%.
