Forgive me if this thread has been proposed before but:

What does everybody think of tweaking the playoff format to get some variety & intrigue?

My proposal would be that they have 3 or 4 different formats & do "draft lottery" type show a week or 2 before the season concludes to choose what format they will use for those playoffs.

The formats to choose from could include:

1. The exact current playoff format they have now
2. 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15 etc regardless of divisions & conference where 2 western or 2 eastern teams could conceivably meet in the SC final.
3. An actual 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7 etc. in each conference regardless of division
4. A crossover 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3, etc. from the other division in your conference like they do at the worlds or WJHC

I'm sure there are more, & feel free to add, but what do the other fans think of this concept?

I say just leave things as they are to be honest....

I both love and hate the idea of having an event where from highest seed to lowest they pick their round 1 opponent then a bracket is generated from that. Think it would be quite the spectacle and a lot of fun, also going to be a lot of memes.
I was about to say you'd probably have to guarantee seeds 1-4 home ice advantage, meaning #1 could only pick between teams 5-8. But then I remembered the abortion that the current format is, where a 3 seed could start on the road, and realized the league doesn't even care about that.

It'd never happen but I'd love the idea TBH

I almost added this one to the choices because I think it would be funny but I think they would need to know for logistics because it's possible the top seeding may not be determined until the last game.

Go back to conference seeding, 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5, but I would add this: The two division winners are guaranteed a playoff spot, but they are seeded based on their record like the rest of the teams. Obviously, one of the two division winners would be the 1 seed as the top record in the conference. But if the other division winner had a worse record than the 2nd place team in the other division, then they would be the 3 seed.

This would still make winning the division mean something, but would also ensure the top teams play the bottom teams throughout.

It's so simple, but the league will never do this...

What am I missing?
Old pre-lockout era 1v8 format had three divisions. Was really annoying because the division winner would automatically lock up a top 3 spot regardless of whether or not other non-division winner playoff teams had more points. So you'd get situations where a team that won a weak division with like 98 pts or whatever bullshit would be seeded higher than a team that played in a good division but didn't win the division (this happened a lot to the Leafs as the Northeast was loaded at the time while the Southeast was really weak year after year).

Okay, I forgot about that stupid quirk.

1v8 the obvious answer, why the league strayed from that I'll never know.

Their refusal to return to it is maddening. Maybe by the 5th or 6th consecutive Oilers vs Kings matchup they'll realize how dumb the current system is.
1v8 format this match up is still happening lol. It's inevitable.

im totally on board , only change ide have is 1 gets to pick opponant , then 2 , and so on in every round . this rewards success as opposed to how it is now where a team with lesser record can tank to avoid a certain opponant . not to mention two excellent teams facing off round 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
