In the US we have what is called "Swiss cheese" which is mild slightly nutty and has holes in it. There are other cheeses which are commonly thought of as Swiss like Ementhaler and maybe gruyere although the latter is also thought of as French. All are very mild.

gruyere is a cheese from a village actually called gruyere. there is also a very specific receipt how to make gruyere. but the company just lost a law suit or something a few months ago, which states now, that in america, every cheese can be called gruyere, because "gruyere" is not aknowledged as a trademark/official receipt or whatever.
this means: if you eat gruyere in the US, you probably are not eating gruyere
