Was just thinking about this after Crosby finally got off the schneid with his OT winner last night. How many of the all time greats never scored a goal in sudden death?

The list might surprise you. List is guys with at least 30 playoff goals scored in their careers.

Gordie Howe
Mario Lemieux
Ray Bourque
Mark Messier
Alex Ovechkin
Paul Coffey
Dickie Moore
Denis Savard
Yvan Cournoyer
Bernie Geoffrion
Dale Hawerchuk
Gilbert Perreault
Alex Delvecchio
Pavel Datsyuk
John Bucyk
Patrik Elias
Bill Barber
Cam Neely
Steve Shutt
Joe Mullen
Larry Murphy
Michel Goulet
Rick Tocchet

Let me know if there are any other glaring omissions or incorrect names above. Messier surprised the hell out of me, given his sheer #'s scored and general play in crunch time. Guess I just assumed.

Obviously chances vary from player to player but more people than you think grace the list above. Many high end HOF talents, who played in many postseason games never scored the "golden goal".

Very surprising to see some names there.

Out of curiosity - do you have data for assists in OT? I wonder how many of these guys still contributed to OT goals without actually scoring them. You'd have to think Lemieux, Messier and Howe at least have some.

Also - would be super interrested in seeing how many OT games played (and even total minutes played) these different players have.

Mark Messier

Messier may not have had an OT winner, but he had a sweet assist on one back in 1991...

Seriously, i'm curious. Is there a list of compiled stats somewhere for OT Playoff Points - not just goals? Would be very curious to see those stats.

I'm not having much luck in finding advanced stats, specifically for OT games. I'm sure Elias has them handy, but there is always the hockey reference way of going player by player, seasons by season of compiling some #'s. I'm going to start with Gordie How and Mario and see what I can find.

Overall:

24 OT games played during Howe's tenure as a Red Wing. However, he essentially missed the entire 49-50 playoff run where 5 of the 24 OT games were played. I'll have to compare Howe to other guys on the list to see if 19/24 OT games is above or below the average.

Seems there was quite the outcry when I shut this down.... We aim to please & so Ive been convinced to re-open it despite my concerns that its a topic with little meat on the bone...
never been any compilations, records kept but you know what?... if you guys enjoy discussing it I dont wanna be known as Killjoy rather than Killion. Ha?...

Carry on. ;)

I had to look it up again, but I was very surprised Ovechkin never scored one yet. Brian Leetch is another one that comes to mind.
