It's early, but Leon Draisitl had to have had one of the worst tournaments ever for a draft-eligible player. At least one that we knew would be taken at the top of the draft. He took some strange penalties, and didn't he get suspended too? It wasn't really an indictment of the player being egregiously awful, nor did people think he was falling apart and becoming a bust, he just seemed to have a lot of strange things happen during games.

Nathan MacKinnon is the obvious one that comes to mind. Of course having NHLers like RNH and Huberdeau on the team because of the lockout didn't help him, but I'll never understand why they brought him along only to bury him on the 4th line for the entire tourney.

Draisaitl was really good in the WJC the year before that though. That's when I first got my eye on him. So not sure if that counts.

I remember watching Bobrovsky and thinking that he was really raw at the time in 2008.

I could see why wasn't drafted then.

He has certainly improved since.

The first name that comes to mind for me is Brandon Saad... Then again, nobody really did anything for the US that year.

Can confirm as a german^^

What year did Saad play and what were his stats?

2012, he had 6 points in 6 games but that was the year the USA went to the relegation side. 5 of his 6 points were against Denmark and Latvia where the USA scored 23 goals in those 2 games, USA scored 7 in their other 4 against Canada, Finland, Czechs and Swiss

I thought Nathan Beaulieu had one of the worst WJC performances for a Canadian D ever IMO. He hasn't turned into a star, but with his play at the WJC you'd think he was a borderline AHL player.

Liked the other thread so I decided I'd make an opposite of it.

For me, Klingberg stands out as one... Was brutal for Sweden but has turned into a gem.

He was brutal for the most part but he was also the catalyst for the comeback against the Russians. We were 3 down going into the 3rd period and Klingberg had been benched during the second but Rönnberg then went all out attack and put Klingberg back into rotation and if I remember correctly he played quite well. So even if he had a bad tournament he showed flashes of skill that promised a lot.

MacKinnon is the big one for Canada, but in the same sense you always knew he would pan out.

Jake Allen is a big one too. Thought he'd never play an NHL game after his World Junior performance.

He reminded me of how stressed Hall could get on the Oilers. Tries to do everything himself and ended up messing up because of it.

Wasn't Marc Andre Fleury kind of a bust at the WJC, and was the goat on a couple of bad goals?.....seems to have had a fine career in Pittsburgh.....don't recall Luongo having a standout WJC career either....and more than few members of various USA teams who busted at the WJC but have gone on to stellar NHL careers.

MacKinnon was used sparingly on the fourth line, even though he was dynamic every time he was out there. People were screaming at the coaching staff to give him more playing time. Not sure the meager looking stat line was his fault. That was the Steve Spott coached team. 'Nuff said.

As for Jake Allen, I know he struggled in the gold medal game, but he was actually 4-0 in his other games, giving up a grand total of 5 goals in those contests. It seems people like to dwell on the negative a bit much. Same deal for Marc Andre Fleury. One bad bounce and the guy's a goat forever. :dunno:

yep that was the year that the coach was completely set on using Rielly-Murphy as a pairing for no reason. Both guys thrived with the puck and going up the ice, so when you had both out at the same time one of them was basically irrelevant.

Fleury was the goat in the gold medal game in 04, but his performance at the 03 WJC had a lot to do with why he was taken 1st overall in the draft that year.

he was electric when they actually put him on the ice, he averaged well under 10 minutes i think. They gave his junior linemate and fellow 17 year old Jonathan Drouin twice as much time. It was insane. Those two tore apart the Q, it was like bringing the Sedin Twins and only putting Hendrik on the ice.

Murphy only made the team because Steve Spott was his junior coach. (and i'm a big Kitchener Rangers fan)

Spott did one of the all time worst coaching jobs imo.
