Players that completely checked out after getting paid

Barry Bonds of the NHL.
Barry Bonds is the all-time HR and WAR (wins above replacement) leader in MLB history.

Think you might be thinking of Bobby Bonilla, who similar to Dipietro has gotten a nice $1 million+ payday every off-season for the past 25 years from the smaller of the two New York teams in their respective sports (Islanders and Mets respectively).

That's a good one actually. I don't think he tried to suck after the contract that was immediately the worst one in the league.............

I won't say more, ok I was in a commercial with the guy and he's a good dude.

The whole time I'm hanging out with the guy I can't stop thinking about how much money he's getting paid and how much he sucks playing for my favorite team............

So I didn't say those thoughts to him because it's not his fault he's a multi millionaire and I'm making near minimum wage while hanging out with the guy briefly.

But it's really hard not to think about that.

Welcome to the current landscape, where the rules are made up and the points.. are dollars, and they matter. If you’re thinking that about Clarkson, just wait until you meet his owner, who is worth literally 500x what Clarkson is worth. And Clarkson actually broke his body doing his work- the owner broke other people’s bodies, because they’re smart or somethin. Or immoral, either or.

Anywho, Yashin is one of the few I feel truly fits the mold. All the talent, didn’t give a shit.

DiPietro was no Luongo but looking to be a pretty good goalie, but got derailed by injuries. And I can't recall the specific timing but Pettersson's issues started about the time he was negotiating the contract, there's obviously more going on their and it's too early to tell.

For that nightmare UFA summer of 2016 Lou Eriksson really takes the cake though. Most of those big UFA signings still had a good season or two then just declined by age. Loui went from 30 goal 60 point winger in Boston straight to Vancouver's 4th line where he played at the same consistent 4th liner level for pretty much the entire 6 years of his contract.
Yeah, if Pettersson checked out, it happened about 3 weeks before he got paid.

While I wouldn't technically say he 'checked out' the idea of a player checking out always makes me think of Chris Drury in his Rangers days and the whole 'won't ruin his weekend' thing. Lol

? Honestly curious what you’re referring to, I dislike Drury. Sabres aimed to re-sign him over Briere, when Briere was the superior player, but I thought Drury ran into legit knee issues for NYR.

I don't remember the situation 100%, but at some point during the struggling Drury/Gomez days of the Rangers Drury answered a question about the teams struggles and he said something to the effect of 'I'm not going to let it ruin my weekend.' It became a bit of a joke whenever Rangers would lose or Drury would have a bad performance.

Again, I'm not trying to say he checked out. I always liked Drury the player. Just that that phrase comes to mind whenever the subject of players checking out comes up.

Yes. Thank you.

Did he retire that year? Or did something happen after that?

No.

The following season he got traded, midseason to the Kings. A year later, he won the Cup with the Kings. He went back to the Ducks as a free agent.

He retired - infamously - after suffering a back injury... while eating pancakes.

Tim Connolly with the Leafs in 2011-2012.

4.75M x 2

Bad for the first season, then gave up after being on the Marlies for a while.

Saying Subban dint play up to the expectations of the contract is dumb. He was playing great for at least 5 seasons aout of 8.
Ok, we get it. It’s personal for you. You stated so in your first post.

Suggestion: stay off HFBoards, PK, you might hear other things that you disagree with about your career or play.

That and injuries.

And Leafs management vastly overpaying him.

One of the AGMs (after being fired by the team) admitted a few years ago that they knew he was a third liner and paid him that much anyways. He was sold in the market as a 1st line forward.

Crazy thing is the Oilers offered him 6x6 but he wanted to play for his childhood team and thus took less money.

Cal Peterson got paid $1 million per NHL start over the last 3 years.

Prior to that he was arguably outplaying an aging but still playing well J Quick.
