Players that completely checked out after getting paid

I just wanna point out- I don’t think “checking out” is a conscious decision, and I don’t think guys ever do it fully (except for maybe Daigle. PLD of past. Ok, it’s rare.)

Guys are naturally gonna be a bit more focused when their next contract is on the line, and given that they’ve made it through the first deal, ya, that’s often when they’re at their best. Then they sign, suffer an injury, and don’t rehab with the same vigor they had that one season. It’s not being lazy, it’s just not pushing yourself as much, not keeping to that Mackinnon routine all the time. You eat another bowl of ice cream, watch a lil less tape, yada yada you get what I’m saying.
Half these dudes mentioned had their body parts implode on ‘em and they still tried to hockey, come on now.

Bryzgalov
I don't even think that is fully accurate. I don't think he was legitimately a great goalie, he was a decent goalie who played in a very structured team-defense system that made him look great. He would have looked rough going pretty much anywhere else, and unfortunately Philly was probably the worst place for him to land given their rather loosey-goosey defense.

The one mistake I see a lot, is a gm overpaying a player from a cup team who was on a cheap contract but now looking to get paid. And I assure you, that cup winning player who signs with a new conflated contract never ever wins a cup. Might be a rare exception

HBO cameras didn't help. Oof

Think you have to make a caveat for the ones that had production taken out of their hands by injury. DiPietro was a good goalie on bad teams that had the worst injuries. He didn't mail it moreso than fate had decided he wasn't meant for that life lol .

Checking out is Loui Eriksson during his Canucks career. Can't even add Clarkson to this list cuz he was never worth that contract. Guys best year was 46 pts and he was awarded that contract. First couple yrs of it he more or less played up to his standards. Those contracts 100% on the idiot gms, not the player.

Wade Redden wasn't a great one either , when he signed w nyr.

I can't really think of any players that checked out after getting paid but the two most obvious check outs to me are Alexander Daigle and Dustin Byfuglien. One fell out of love for the game and the other just wanted to fish.

So, Daigle just wanted to fish? Because the documentary I saw on the guy, he NEVER loved the game, just knew he was good and wanted money. It seemed like hockey was a chore to him but he stayed with it because he knew he could make some money.

Buff just wanted to fish.

I would say David Clarkson but he was the same player. Just had one season where a bunch of pucks bounced off him into the net.

That and injuries.

And Leafs management vastly overpaying him.

One of the AGMs (after being fired by the team) admitted a few years ago that they knew he was a third liner and paid him that much anyways. He was sold in the market as a 1st line forward.
