Players that completely checked out after getting paid

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

In the meantime, feel free to join our Discord Server

Setoguchi had problems with alcohol abuse, signed a contract, and was traded the very next day to Minnesota. To cope he leaned into his alcohol abuse more. He didn't check out, he had a problem.

Dipietro's arrogance (when he was younger) and injuries are the knocks on him-it never was him checking out. If anything the criticism was that he (and the team to be fair as it's their call) were too impatient and rushed him coming back-pushing him too hard-before completely healing because Dipietro wanted to compete until the end. Hell he even accepted an AHL contract to try and get back to the NHL despite being guaranteed a $1.5million payday for decades (literally) to come. His work ethic was one of the few things about his career that has never been questioned.

DiPietro was no Luongo but looking to be a pretty good goalie, but got derailed by injuries. And I can't recall the specific timing but Pettersson's issues started about the time he was negotiating the contract, there's obviously more going on their and it's too early to tell.

For that nightmare UFA summer of 2016 Lou Eriksson really takes the cake though. Most of those big UFA signings still had a good season or two then just declined by age. Loui went from 30 goal 60 point winger in Boston straight to Vancouver's 4th line where he played at the same consistent 4th liner level for pretty much the entire 6 years of his contract.

Carey Price for me. He signed that contract with a year left on the old one, his numbers tanked hardcore likely cause of you know he entered the Player assistance program likely years after when things started…

Small sample size, but Pettersson started to trend back in the right direction recently, before he got injured again, anyways. He's had 10 points in his last 9 games, and excluding the game where he was injured early, 9 points in his last 6 full games.

I can't really think of any players that checked out after getting paid but the two most obvious check outs to me are Alexander Daigle and Dustin Byfuglien. One fell out of love for the game and the other just wanted to fish.
