In other words, a player with the most 30-39 goal seasons, but who never had a 40+ goal season. I'm particularly interested in players from the expansion era. Thanks!

I knew Kessel would be at the top. The greatest 40 goal scorer to never score 40 goals is a meme that has been floating around in my brain for YEARS, given how Leafs fans immediately branded him a 40 goal guy when Toronto acquired him.

As soon as I saw this thread title I suspected Phil would be the answer. Tied for first place with a few others.

It is crazy to me that Bergeron ends his career as the better goalscorer than Phil. You think of Patrice as an elite 2-way center who could contribute in every zone, not as a top flight goalscorer. Truly one of the great players of his generation.

Interesting that it's possible to acquire membership of the 500 goal club without having a single 40+ goal season, shown by Ron Francis with 549 goals in 1731 games.
