He's an interesting player to me, because he's a guy that I wanted when he signed in Detroit , and somebody I still kind of want but I don't think it's going to happen because I don't think he has the size that Berube wants in the bottom 6..

He's also a guy I think could get a contract that the team the signs him regrets very quickly .particularly if he goes purely for money.

I think he's a good player but I think he will get overpaid.

what do you think he gets?

Shouldn’t be much. He’s not a consistent player with the kind of production he had this past season, he’s more of a 30-35ish point player. I think he falls in the range of 3.75-4m/yr.

Well 3.75 I would probably do.

But the cap is going up and he did have that career year, and maybe It's not a career year but it probably is.

I think he can get5-5.5 if It's purely about money.

A team that gives him 5-5.5m/yr likely has an idiot for a GM. If you go by comparable, I would say Iafallo is a good basis. Similar ppg but Alex is better at the physical aspects and he is a 3.66m/yr cap hit. I think 3.75-4m is a good ballpark of where he should be being 3yrs younger and maybe has something more to prove.

I actually think Pius Suter has been extremely consistent in the 4 years leading up to this latest one:

He’s averaged 15:42 of Icetime and put up consecutive seasons of 14, 15, 14 and 14 goals.

This past season with the disappearance of EP40, trading of JTM and late season injury to Chytil he got more ice time and more top 6 Icetime.

His ice time jumps to 17:20 as a result and he puts up 25 goals (shooting percentage is 5% higher than his career average as well).

…so, if you’re paying a 29 YO for this past season, that looks like a mistake waiting to happen.

If you’re looking at it as a guy that will get you 15 goals, is good on the PK, is low maintenance (and your coach will probably love him), can play anywhere up or down the lineup including in the top 6 (even as a center for short periods) there is value there.

On the other hand he lacks foot speed, isn’t great in the faceoff circle and lacks size…

In my opinion he’s worth whatever you value his best NHL season before this last one. Then factor in for the utility he provides and the rising cap.

He was horribly underpaid each of the last 2 seasons in Vancouver.

The unfortunate part of it for Suter is part of what makes him so useful to a team is how much he provides for the money.

Pay him 5 million per and now you’re left with a guy who is undersized, makes your forward group slower, and ‘only puts up 15 goals a season.’

I personally think he’s still a value at $4 million. Maybe even at 4.25 considering the dearth of centers available. At 4.5 million plus it seems like you’re putting the player in a position to fail.

I would expect the Flyers (and Tocchet) to make him a substantial offer if he makes it to market.

Normal years guys get 10% more than reasonable 7/1, this year maybe guys get 20% more than reasonable so $4.5x4 or 5 maybe

He had a good year here but his value was in his contract.
Paying him five million will immediately ruin a big part of what was so appealing about having him on a roster.
Give credit where credit it is due, he was valuable in his own right to the team this past season at about the same level if not higher as Debrusk or Garland who are in the $5M range.

Of course the risk is if you pay him for that, which turns out to be his peak career season, and he reverts back to his career norms which is a 15 goal 30 point player. If you could guarantee this is his new norm though then for any team with the cap space he'd be a good add at the $4.5-5M range. And odds are a GM will be desperate enough to take that chance.
