I wouldn't be even remotely surprised for Vegas fans to just firmly say no to this, but I was looking for a LD replacement for the Penguins because they are very likely trading Pettersson and Grzelcyk as rentals this year. I saw that Hague has been basically permanently demoted to 3rd pair LD role since Vegas has their entire top-4 (Hanifin-Pietrangelo and McNabb-Theodore) locked up long-term. With him being a RFA after the year, I was curious to see if they'd be willing to move him.

The idea I had was something like this:

Penguins trade Grzelcyk, O'Connor and the Penguins highest 3rd
Vegas trades Hague

This swap has Vegas adding $1.375 million in cap. Grzelcyk replaces Hague on the depth chart as Vegas' 3rd pair LD, while O'Connor gives them a boost to their bottom-6 winger group. The Penguins 3rd should probably be around #75. Hague slides into Pettersson's future vacated spot at LD.

Like I said, I wouldn't be at all surprised for Vegas to just say no to this because it is basically the equivalent of 3 3rds for Hague, but I thought that Hague made a lot of sense as a target for the Penguins and wasn't sure what made sense for Vegas.

Vegas doesn’t need to change their defense especially at the expense adding salary, for low returns.

I think this deal is less about changing their defense and more getting O'Connor and a 3rd for Hague. I think Hague's value is probably higher (I'd guess he could bring back a 2nd and a prospect), but a cheap rental 3rd liner and an early 3rd doesn't seem that much less than that.

If the Penguins had a late 2nd to trade, I think Grzelcyk, O'Connor and a 2nd for Hague looks pretty reasonable in value.

I was thinking about Hague the other day. I was wondering if Vegas was going to be able to afford to resign him given their fairly large cap already dedicated to defense and needing to sign several forwards and two goalies. He seemed like a good candidate to send out for a cost-controlled guy in return.

I think Vegas would like this deal a bit more if DOC had an extra one or two years on his deal or if we were offering a guy like POJ instead of Gryz. That said, I'd do it from the Pens POV.

Hague has already shown he can play in this league and do so as a 19-20 minute a night absolute giant condor who still has solid skill for his size.

Vegas shouldn’t move Hague for a couple pending UFA‘s and a 3rd, since Nic could easily return more value then what is being offered here.
