Don't think Pittsburgh has ever cared about hockey when they didn't have a Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr or Crosby, Malkin, etc. all together at the same time.

They were effectively bankrupt until Mario stepped in financially to save them. I think the combination of poor play and mismanagement led them down that path. It didn't help that their fan support was garbage either.
