It's a non-linear action adventure with some "souls"-like elements. You progress through the world by checking out your map and going where you've yet to be. Some areas are only accessible after acquiring certain upgrades. At first the combat seems unfair, but after more and more playing you get significantly better.

The two things I don't like about this game, so far, are that they literally do not give you a map to start (you have to buy it with in game currency) and the "souls"-like death penalties. If I die, just let me start from outside the room I died in. Don't make me go trek for 5+ minutes just to die again, and again, and again...

I never got around to HK even though everyone says it's terrific.

I just now finally got around to Risk of Rain (the first one). It's addictive but holy shit is it punishing.

Not as punishing as watching this slop they call a hockey game, though. Video game time.
