I don't see what reason we have to think Marino will struggle next year, unless he starts getting injuries that cause his game to decline.

Not to mention that a lot of Penguins defensemen didn't have those standard "sophomore slumps". They may have been a little worse in year 2 than year 1, but the only defenseman that really jumps to mind that was noticeably worse in his sophomore year was Pouliot. Maatta was fantastic before getting cancer and Dumoulin and Pettersson were at least fine in their sophomore years. Looking back on older defensemen, it doesn't look like guys like Goligoski or Letang had sophomore slumps either. Maybe Despres did? I feel like he got jerked around hard by the Shero/Bylsma regime though, so it's hard to say.

I imagine we see him struggle because people are expecting him to replace Letang.

Look at what expectations did to Pettersson’s stock around here after basically having an identical year to the one prior.

I mean struggle in the eyes of fans doesn't mean actually struggle, though.

Marino is more comparable to Paul Martin in my eyes than Letang. I'm expecting Marino to top out at what Martin's best was in Pittsburgh, which is a #1D but not a Letang level #1D.

Paul Martin was great, but I’d caution us thinking that type of “1D” lends itself to success.

You'd obviously need offensive punch elsewhere, which is what I think they're hoping for with Matheson.

When Letang is done, gonna need another layer beyond Matheson, even if he pans out or exceeds expectations.

What if you had 6 Marino’s? ;)

The roster formula to winning always changes. I feel like right now 18 skaters who are basically robots could win today with the right system.

Eh idk about that. Look at Vegas' success as a team prior to acquiring Pietrangelo. Their defense was led by guys like Schmidt, Theodore and McNabb for the most part.

Sure, you'd rather have a Pietrangelo or a Letang caliber #1D instead of a Martin or a Byfuglien caliber #1D, but you can still have very legitimate cup contenders with a defense led with a Martin/Byfuglien caliber guy instead of a Pietrangelo/Letang caliber guy.

Vegas had Theodore on top of Schmidt.

Honestly, Yohe is a terrible analyst of the team and generally sucks. Rossi at least has connections. Yohe is just a loud speaker for the org.

Agreed. I don't give anyone who regularly reports on or writes about the Penguins any time of day outside of Jesse. Just running with the discussion.

My guess is the Pens management is past the keep the core together as only Geno, Sid and Letang remain. Letang contract is up after next year and freeing up 7.5 million after this year is real. At some point you need to get a return for a player that just is not justified to extend. Actually he is along with Zucker two assets that either can be moved and open up room for a prospect to emerge on the roster and get a return after this year.

An analytics guy who used to work for Florida wrote like a 5 tweet timeline on how Matheson could potentially be a solid top six forward.

Ill be honest. I didnt watch him much, but it doesnt seem to look like he treats the puck like a grenade and he seems to skate/flow pretty well on the ice.

Can Matheson be L4 RW?
You figured out the real reason for his acquisition.

So...what do the Pens do with the spare cap? Save $$$?

Maybe they should snag Grabner! My old flame from a few years ago
I know he's probably fully washed and will miss like 20 games, but at least the PK would be fun as hell with him and Kap.

Probably league minimum or like 1 mil. Bagged 3 goals in 9 games in the playoffs :thumbu:
