"The IIHF allows some flexibility if the results of the 2017 tournament are such that [the U.S. and Canada] are not in the same pool so that a country can be moved," Ogrean said. "Those early discussions on a 'what if' basis have happened so nothing is quite certain yet, and there would be other options of course, but we think the U.S.-Canada rivalry is the best in the game and that's obviously what we're designing this for."

Assistant executive director of USA Hockey Mike Bertsch said the date of the outdoor game would be either Dec. 27 or Dec. 29, 2017.

So they can switch the groups up so that Canada and the USA play each other, that's probably what they'll do then. Here's hoping that in the previous standings are such that they can just flip 1 of the 3/4, 5/6, or 7/8 pairs and not disturb anything else(or flip that pair and then next pair to even it out again), unlike if they both finish in the same pair, like gold/silver from the previous year and then have 1/2/5/8/9 in the same group and 3/4/6/7/10 in the same group which is a little more uneven than 1/4/6/7/9 and 2/3/5/8/10

also not a New Years Eve game which is interesting, I figured it would be, does that have anything to do with the potential football schedule? You can schedule around it in the regular season but maybe they needed time to get it back to a football stadium in case Buffalo had a home playoff game(lol)

Is the NHL season a gimmick?
In the NHL, it's just one regular season game. In the WJC, one loss can be the difference between #4 and #1 in your group.

It's incredibly stupid and illogical. I understand that the WJC are getting popular every year but dumb **** like this, all-star voting, etc ruin the game. Just let them ****ing play, that's when it's at its best.

It's an incredibly stupid idea. Canadians should boycott this nonsense. It's getting out of hand.

OR: if what it all comes down to is the almighty dollar and profit, here's an idea, how about not exploiting the free labour and cut the players in on 50% of the profits.

why not, I can imagine it would be a great atmosphere with a ton of canadians and americans.

or do you think it influences the game that much? (being it an out-door game)

they played an outdoor game at the Wolrd hockey championships in Germany a few years back and nobody boycotted it, it was a huge success, it's not like they're playing basketball for 1 game or something, it's different conditions but it's still hockey.

Do I care for it? Not really, but I'm not gonna get in an unroar about them tossing in something new, something most people will enjoy, something the players will enjoy. And regardless of who wins Canada/USA will both make the QF, it's not like it's the GMG

Have you not been paying attention to my anti Hockey Canada rants all these years. Now USAH is jumping on board and trying to outgreed HC. I'm opposed to the gross commercialization of this tournament. It's one thing for the pros to do it, the NHL is a business...but if you are going to go this far with it, then the players deserve a piece of the action. Hockey Canada/TSN has turned this into great holiday tradition, but it's becoming more about the profit and less about the hockey. A lot of NHL teams are lining up to line their pockets, yet for the most part don't see much value in the tournament when the question comes up about releasing their junior age players playing in it. that's a tad hypocritical, don't you think? If they want to take it this far, profits baby profits, then release all junior age players to play in it without exception.

And yes, the less then ideal conditions influences the game and potentially the outcome...and personally I'm just not a fan of outdoor games. I've attended one. And they don't broadcast well. I haven't watch an NHL Jan 1 game since 2009.

Agreed!
We bought tickets the last time it was held in Buffalo but maybe not this time with the outdoor game.
Really really have a huge dislike for them. Quite lousy hockey and even worse viewing for fans.

It's been about 8 years since the first winter classic in buffalo. Living in buffalo, I've talked to dozens of people over the past 8 years about being at the game. I, as well as everyone I've talked to, said that that was one of the best days of our life between the tailgating and the entire experience. And that was just a regular season game against Pittsburgh. This one will be USA vs Canada in the WJC. Wayyyy bigger. IMO the back and fourth action between the fans will be crazy like a Buffalo vs Toronto game at the First Niagara Center but even bigger and with 4X as many people in the building.

Please do, we'd love a home field advantage :handclap:

I was taking a break from studying for final exams to hopefully hear some good news that Pittsburgh received the bid to host the tournament. Did not see Ralph Wilson Stadium being a factor in deciding where to locate the tournament.

Credit to Buffalo though, the new harbor center attached to the Marriott with First Niagara nearby is a great setup. I do think USAH would have given the tournament to Pittsburgh if not for the outdoor game revenue-maximizing factor.

Another problem for Pittsburgh is that there are no other arenas in the Pittsburgh area suitable to host the games. Travel is a minimum 1.5 hours away to either Wheeling, Johnstown, Youngstown, or Erie where rinks are large enough.

I do think Buffalo will be very successful however, and I would love to go to the USA vs. Canada outdoor game. Pittsburgh should host the 2025 tournament! (Or whenever the IIHF gives us the next tourny)
