Last year Penguins got 22 and 31 for 12 so to get top 10 Rust/Rakell would provide more value to a team picking there than the 31st pick

Yes but you're missing the point. A team with a pick that high likely doesn't really need Rust/Rak that badly. Their value at 2.5m comes to PO teams who are close to the cap. And those teams are unlikely to have high picks.

I don’t think any team good or bad is trading a 1st for Rakell even at that retention
People are using examples of trading for RHD like it applies. Guentzel trade is more applicable and the Pens couldn’t get a 1st for him.

Detroit traded a 1st rounder (15th overall) for a 34 year old dman. Teams can be dumb.
Different scenario - they traded a pick that could have been 32 for a defenseman with playoff experience. That’s the trade deadline premium.

Just like Nashville traded a 1st for Paul Gaustad which ended up being 21st.

At the draft, rust and rakell aren’t being dealt for a top 10 pick

Detroit and STL both assumed that pick was going to be @ 25th OA when that deal was consummated. Blues got lucky when the Red Wings went belly up down the stretch. Detroit would not have traded that pick for Faulk if they thought they were going to miss the playoffs and the pick would end up in the first half of the first round.

Looking at the draft, I could see BUF at 27 or SEA at 25 being interested in Rakell or Rust, especially Buffalo if Tuch walks. A veteran top 6 wing with close to the same production as Tuch for half the cap hit would be valued there, especially in Buffalo where I suspect it's still hard to attract talent.

Then PIT could look to package 22 and 27 to get up into the 8-12 range, depending on how those teams like whats available vs their board and whether they want more picks to build depth. Stl going into a rebuild might be a target for that at 11, allowing them to have a total of 4 first rounders in this draft.

Those pieces seem better suited for the teams drafting in the bottom 10.
Usually. If we're talking top 15: Jackets, Isles, Devils, Preds, Panthers, Jets, Kraken, Rangers, Leafs -> All will be pushing for playoffs next year. That's not a usual circumstance (granted 15th OA usually sits close) at the draft.

Obviously some of those picks would never happen, but at least half of them could/should be available for top 6 talent + a 1st in the same draft.

Some people have looked at the players alone and not the prospect of trading down. But both of them are on extraordinarily reasonable deals - cap and term. The sweet spot really: 2 years left each at 5M each. If we retained down to 2.5M I don't see why every team couldn't have the space.

The Pens didn't try to get a 1st for him. Dubas specifically wanted already drafted players who would in theory be available sooner than a freshly drafted player would be - or at least that's what he told the press after the deal was made. It didn't really work out in terms of the players since Ponomarev is in the KHL, Koivenun looks more like a 4th line player and Lucius isn't going to sign with us (last I heard). But we got Brunicke, Novak a 2nd & 4th.

the top 5 won't do the trades unless you offer like Kindell or Crosby

6th is Calgary who is full rebuild, this doesn't do much for them even if they deal BOTH rust and rakell
7th is Seattle and they do love their 2nd to 3rd line forwards, but you'd have to think even they would realize they need young elite talent
8th is winnipeg who is kinda win now with their cores age, but are in dire need of a 2C, not 2 wingers.
9th is florida who is in win now too, but they need a G and maybe a D...idk where Rust or Rakell would even play on that team lol
10th is nashville who might've done it under trotz (lol), but mcfarland probably has them selling older pieces to get younger talent, not the other way around

8th or 9th are the only ones seemingly available but they probably don't want this package tbh
