This^^^^^^^ The trade offer isn't a bad value to Montreal, but the need for a winger isn't there. The Canadiens are better served using assets to trade for a 2C.

what in the world are you talking about? Laine had two years when Montreal got him for Jordan Harris and a 2nd as sweetener
Montreal's not adding and probably not even trading him this summer, considering he's spending it in Montreal training and might even convince his buddy Ehlers to consider Montreal
The point of including Laine in the deal is that I'm skeptical that Montreal would do Mailloux for Rakell without sending Laine in the deal. The point of adding Laine is to get a prospect that I'm skeptical Rakell would get without taking a big deal back. He is negative value, but getting Mailloux is accounting for Laine's negative value.
If the Penguins need more value back, I'd just throw out getting another 2nd or 3rd rounder back. Something like Rakell for Laine, Mailloux and #49 this year. At the same time, Montreal is so flush with picks that I think them trying to do Mailloux and #16 for a 2C/top-4 RD makes a lot of sense and it would make sense to decline this deal.

Wouldn't do it as a Pens fan. Rakell's a versatile 1st line winger, coming off a 35 goal year, on a great contract and Mailloux isn't worth taking back a negative value deal in Laine.

Value seems reasonable for both sides, but fit doesn't make much sense for Mtl & not sure that Laine does anything to help the Pens who were already a top 6 PP team but dreadful at keeping picks out of their net.
Both teams likely pass.
Habs wouldn’t trade for Rackell in this scenario. Rackell is a luxury, not a key need.
Someone else - a contender - might give significant value for a retained Rackell. Definitely not the Habs…

That's not even a price set too high, that's a UFA set price, not a 30 goal scorer with 3 years term left at 5.0.

Hughes has said that he doesn’t want to be bringing in older players that will block out younger players from cracking the lineup and that’s what this move will probably do. We don’t need a 32 year old winger, we need a young #2 center or RHD that can grow with the team.
Not a fit for either team. Dubas knows that Rakell has significant value and will only move him for a overpay that meets the Pens needs. I don't trade him for anything other than a top LD, top center/winger prospect for starters.
Yeah, idk. The value is probably fair, but this doesn’t excite me at all, especially not that we’d be giving up a prospect like Mailloux - I’d rather give up a 1st instead of him. Also, Rakell would pretty much be taking Demidov’s potential slot in the top-six for next year. All things considered, I’d have to pass.

Last year was also his first 30 goal season since 17-18, and the season before he only had 15 goals and 37 points in 70 games. Most teams looking to add him are probably contenders looking to put him on their 2nd line where he won't be playing with a Crosby level centre, so they are probably understandably skeptical that he would repeat last season.

Like others have said, if we’re giving up these type of assets, we’d be looking for a 2C or a RHD. This is not that.
Giving up a close to NHL ready RHD prospect for a winger like Rakell doesn’t make sense for us.
Even if it’s a 1st instead of Mailloux, idk if I want Rakell jamming up the top-six when Demidov needs playing time.
It's the anchor that no one is addressing here.
Also LM doesn't have a path in Montreal and is a borderline NHL full time Dman and that's probably not going to change.

He scored 28 the year before last, and was playing with a lot of drek for years in Anaheim before being dealt to Pittsburgh.
He's proven he can score about 30 goals if he's playing with a 1st line calibre center. That alone is a pretty significant selling point - how many players are scoring 30 goals with 2nd line calibre linemates?

Not that I am advocating for acquiring Rakell, but who exactly would he potentially block? I don't see any top six wingers ready to join the Habs any time soon.

Beck, Roy, Florian Xhakej, Kapanen, Farrell.... Hage as a winger if a 2C is acquired otherwise, Heinemann might be a top 6 option if given a chance. None are sure fire prospects, but all could be top 6 options, so blocking their path has to be taken into account.
great, go elsewhere for a deal. Imo, Montreal isn't going to blow Pittsburgh out of the water for a 32 year old winger on a team that's still rebuilding, regardless of what happened this year.
Assets like a young RD prospect, 1st rounders etc...are for a younger player.
and for the last time Laine's contract is not a problem.
Habs have lots of cap and if they feel like dealing him, they'll do it at the deadline.
Hughes has already gone on record as saying they don't make the playoffs without him.
Is he a mess defensively? yes. Was he injured all year? yes. Is he great on the PP? yes
Where do you get that from? They 6.1 million in cap space. They can go into LTIR, but as is said ad nauseam, LTIR is NOT increased cap space. It's actually more of a hindrance than a help if you need to dip into it over the summer. I really hope they're able to dump that contract post-July 1 after the SB is paid.
Laine also has a NTC. He refused to waive it for Philly and Minnesota when Columbus was trying to move him.
