It's not about cap room, it's about losing a retention slot for 3 years when they shouldn't need to use a retention slot on Rakell to get a 1st for him.

Seamus Casey is a better prospect than anyone currently in our system.

Why would we care about using a retention slot when we have 2 more opening up in the off season if we are getting a 1st and a solid prospect while getting out of Rakell?

I don't see enough in a 5'9" and 160 lb OFD for me to be particularly excited about bringing him in.

"Getting out of Rakell"

Why are we making it sound like a guy pacing for 36G that is signed at 5m in a rising cap is a bad thing?

Pens can trade him without retention for a 1st quite easily

Seems pricey unless Palat for some reason agrees to go as the cap dump. I don't know Rakell's game well enough to be confident he'd return major excess value at 2.5m for 3.5 more years but that seems like it could pay off nicely and NJ could use both those guys.

I don't hate it for NJ *ducks from the Casey fanatics here*

With Palat included, this should be an easy yes for the NJD. Dumping that albatross and getting Rackell at 50% is a win.

He's on pace for 35 goals 70 points and would expect him to put up 25-30 goals most seasons and he's equally comfortable on both wings. He'd be insane value at 2.5m.

I’m not moving Casey with Nemec not looking great on the big club. Not for a soon to be 32yo pacing for a career year, even if currently great value.

I don’t know that NJ is in great position for the more sought after deadline players.
