And yet literally zero other team in the NHL wanted him for free when he was on waivers, hence why he's getting his contract terminated now and heading back to Europe.
If Sully would have done the same to DOC he would have cleared waivers to. It’s not a hard concept to understand. A coach benching you for long periods of time lowers your perceived value.

Honestly, this guy is a very nice guy, almost childish. He is very athletic and strong.

… problem is, he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Was communication / English still an issue for him?

It's almost like Puljujarvi has been on multiple different teams and those teams came to the same conclusion as well.

The excuses Penguins fans make for Puljujarvi are bizarre.

Let's be real guys. This guy is 26 years old and has gotten every chance in the world. Way more than most guys with his career would've gotten. He was then put on waivers where none of the other 31 teams took him for free on an 800k deal.

Mike Sullivan did not ruin him.

He would be a decent Bottom 2'er in "some" NHL team, but so are 500 other guys. I think that's the final reason he never made it - no "special" talent, like Laine's shot, Aho's playmaking or Rantanen's finishing. He'll make a pretty penny in Switzerland, where I think he'll be a good Top 2 winger with plenty of points.

...he was the Consensus #3 that fell to the Oil at #4...
Kind of like Zadina was consensus pick and fell to Detroit at 6. The issue with consensus is that 1) Just because he's there doesn't mean he fits your team's needs. And 2) Most GM's will tell you that their lists and the Scouting Lists are usually wildly different.

...and that's fine...just pointing out that the Oil taking him at #4 wasn't a reach; in fact, most thought it was a gift...

He's probably going back to Europe because he realized no one wants him in the NHL.

His draft position carried him to a much longer career than he deserved tbh.

Yeah. His draft hype/pedigree/position garnered him far more chances and opportunities than his play ever really dictated. With his size and (sometimes when healthy) straight line speed, he was catnip for multiple GMs and Coaches who seemed to think they'd be the one to "unlock" his potential. But it's always been a tease. He has some fatal flaws that make the tools he does have kind of useless.

I said it about him back in his draft year where i was very against the grain in really not liking him as a prospect, where i described him as a "head down, stick up" player. Just doesn't see the ice well at all, and doesn't pay attention to any of the details like...stick positioning either. Always just charging along at the wrong thing, sloppy positioning, inefficient angles and not getting his stick in lanes and on the ice where it needs to be, and lacking the agility to even adjust anyway. Just never seemed to grasp any of that stuff that makes for an effective, consistent, Bottom-6 "forechecker"...much less the Top-6 scoring winger he was billed as by most.

But that's fine. He carved out a longer career than he probably deserved, made some decent money...and now he'll be able to go back to Europe where he'll still collect a decent enough paycheque and probably be able to go back to just being taller and faster in a straight line than a lot of defenders, so he doesn't have to "think the game" so much. But being waived and nobody biting was pretty much all she wrote for his NHL ambitions...this is just having had some time to digest that and move on.

This is a guy who was an offensive dynamo playing for Karpat against men while a 16 & 17 year old teenager and was a legit #3 pick in his draft year. I'll always wonder if his career might have progressed differently if he hadn't spent the first 8 years of his career under Oilers control and coaching. I think by the time he got away from the Oilers organization his confidence was shot.

Calgary should go for him as their 4th line is a mess. Even spot with Backlund and watch him get the famous Backlund bump that has properly developed many players.

I'd take a chance. What would the Flames have to lose? Kevin Rooney?

I was shocked to see that he's still only 26

If it wasn't for his draft position, he would have been terminated from the NHL 2-3 years ago.

All in all, making a few millions to attempt to play in the NHL is not a bad life considering he has absolutely 0 Hockey IQ.

The problem is that you think anyone is saying Puljujarvi is good.

What is being said is that he’s better than some of the guys who have been staples in the bottom 6, which is probably true. It doesn’t mean Puljujarvi is good, it means they are worse.

It is also true that Sullivan has been much more critical to guys like Puljujarvi and Puustinen when they make a mistake like taking a penalty or a missed coverage that results in a goal against. Acciari literally handed the game over on a silver platter with a bad giveaway a few weeks ago and never missed a shift.

Both things can be true that Puljujarvi is not a good player and Sullivan is a crappy coach who plays favorites, most notably for guys that just so happen to have been born, or played college, within a 100 mile radius of Boston.

The poster I replied to claimed that Puljujarvi could have been a big bodied 3rd liner on par with O'Connor if Sullivan would have just played him there.

I think we can all agree Puljujarvi started off the season pretty good. Sullivan had a quick trigger to sit him when he made a mistake. Some players can take that pressure and focus and use that to play better. Some it messes with them and they play worse. Puljujarvi is obviously one of the latter. I personally think he was fine, but again that’s comparing him to useless players like Nieto, Imama, Acciari, whoever else they trot out there next.
