Is Helenius a "top center prospect" though? Looks like he had a pretty mediocre year in the AHL and a blah WJC.

To; Buffalo: Karlsson with 2.5 million retention and Rust and number 2 pick
To: Pens Byram and Helenius and Buffalo number 1 pick.
Buffalo has to win now mode.
Buffalo gets badly needed RD and proven RW right shot scorer.
Pens get needed LD, higher end center or RW prospect and pick.

Karlsson is a boutique D-man.

At this point in his career you need more retention for EK. He's a PP guy thats a massive liability defensively thatll need to be sheltered if he's on a team that wants to compete now.

That's a common misperception.

EK isn't a great PP player - he got displaced on the Pens #1 unit by Grizzlick, justifiably.

Not sure what I'm missing here. I think maybe you can argue the Helenius vs Rust thing but the rest is comically lopsided for the Penguins.

I would trade Helenius for Rust. Send it over to Kevyn.

I'd jump at that immediately if that was on the table tbh.

That's why I said I think it could be debatable, I think most Penguins fans would say yes to that but it's entirely reasonable for a Sabres fan to say yes to that as well.

I’d much rather have Helenius as a potential true center. Rust very much strikes me as a guy who will quickly become irrelevant when he’s not skating next to Crosby (or a similar caliber center). He’s also 32, so who knows how much useful life he has left in the NHL even with ideal playing circumstances.

I really think he's going to Carolina. Slavin - EK top pair is poetry.

They're the type of cup competitor he would waive for, they have a need with Burns and Orlov moving on replaced by Karlsson and Nikiskin, respectively, and those two departures open the cap space.
