I'm a fan of neither team but that looks atrocious for BUF. I'm not certain they need veterans on decline, rather players that are entering their prime. I don't think sacrificing all these pieces for decline is the name of the game in BUF.

Sabres need Defensive D. EK, even with retention, is difficult to move. Byram will be traded but not for a player like EK. Makes no sense for the Sabres.

Yeah Karlsson would definitely not allow a trade to Buffalo even if he was the kind of defenseman Buffalo wanted. Just a bad fit all around.

I do think there could be something worth discussing around Rust for futures, but the Penguins are very likely not trading Rust so it's probably a moot point.

I think some here miss the key point. Buffalo has to win like now. Byram will be moved and Helenius is still a prospect. Buffalo gets massive production now and missing the playoffs for years won't end without proven talent. Yes it is more that Buffalo needs to win vs continue to build for some day they finally get in. Pens give up all star players here. But correct karlsson and Rust are not jumping for joy here, but watching Buffalo with 5 lefties on the PP just isn't going to cut it.

Buffalo doesn't need yet another offensive defenseman. Rust? Sure. That's a smaller deal than what you've proposed. But EK is redundant for the Sabres.

I think Byram is pretty fair value for Rust given his age and the tread on his tires. Adding a top center prospect from an organizations with major concerns about its center depth would be a no go for me. But then I'm not in charge.

At this point in his career you need more retention for EK. He's a PP guy thats a massive liability defensively thatll need to be sheltered if he's on a team that wants to compete now.

I get all of this but EK65 just isn't what Buffalo needs and even though Rust probably helps them in addition to EK65 more than Bryam....maybe, it's just not a good fit

But hey if the Pens can pull the trigger on this hats off to them.

Is Helenius a "top center prospect" though? Looks like he had a pretty mediocre year in the AHL and a blah WJC.

For a guy who was 18(turned 19 7 days ago) at the start in the AHL pretty good and he's PPG in their current playoff run so it looks like he's adjusted to NA hockey pretty well .

Yeah I don't need plusses from BUF here. Byram for Rust + 2nd + Poulin would thrill me. I'd upgrade that 2nd to our 11OA if Helenius is added, and sleep fine.
