Skenes will have a year shaved off his service time requirements for the top 2 finish in the ROTY vote, which he'll surely achieve.
He was also named a finalist for the CY Young award, which is incredible, and that would have netted us an extra draft pick.
IF, he had been on the opening day roster.
So, we now have 1 less year of Skenes AND we get NO comp for his dominant year and 1 year less of service time. Because we didn't have the best P prospect in a generation, on the f***ing opening day roster.
They could have literally had him up for the first week and then sent him down, and returned him when they originally did, and he'd qualify for a quality draft pick = more draft pool $$$

Arguing that they should have had him up to start the year just to get the extra draft pick doesn't sound that different than arguing they should have kept him down for longer beyond the super-2 deadline 
If they would have kept Skenes down for longer, he wouldn't have played enough to even be a finalist for the ROY.

It is different though as it would have been something Skenes wanted and would not have hurt the Pirates at all, unlike keeping Skenes down longer, which would have been something Skenes didn't want and would have hurt the Pirates.

They brought him up early enough because they needed the juice from his promotion and he was clearly ready to be in the rotation from day 1.
So they split the difference and f***ed themselves in the process.
There was no justification to not having him up on day 1 and now they're going to have 1 less year of him and no comp.

Having Skenes be down for longer and not hit super-2 status would have objectively benefited the Pirates.
I'm not saying they should have done that, I just think this "what if?" game with Skenes' promotion is silly. He had thrown like 15 professional innings when the season started.

I meant wouldn't have hurt the current actual MLB team. I know that is something none of us are conditioned to think about though. I mean, the management team clearly does not consider it.

Okay? That doesn't change anything I said. He pitched 6.2 innings between AA and AAA in 2023 and threw 3 innings in the pre-season in 2024.
How they handled him was perfectly appropriate, especially considering how strong Jones was in the pre-season. Their rotation already had Keller, Jones, Gonzales, Perez and Falter to start the year. They had the starting pitching depth where they didn't need to rush Skenes to the MLB, and by the time he was called up, he was ready to dominate. They were easing him into the MLB pitchers schedule from what he was in college and it obviously paid off with how good he was in the MLB.
For all of the issues the Pirates have, how they handled Skenes isn't one of them. They went smart and conservative with him and gradually built up his pitch limits, to the point where he was able to spend basically the last 5 months in the MLB without needing to shut him down.
