OT: Pirates Talk: Lets Play Ball

You know what, most declared before the draft that Skenes was the obvious selection. Then most declared after last season that the debate had been settled with many not believing that it could ever had been a decision.......

But I'll still stand by my take that I would have rather had a hitter like Langford for 160 than Skenes for 30. Taking a look at this last series, the Pirates may have swept the Marlins with Langford in the lineup. Also... see Jones status.

Still Skenes probably was the right choice simply based on what a great GM could get in a trade for him, something the next GM should definitely consider.

Langford had a very meh rookie season, considering the hype on his bat coming out and unless the power numbers pick up over the long haul, it's not a comparison. Maybe he becomes a superstar. I don't see it. Yet. And considering the Bucs reputation for developing bats, I'm glad we didn't go that route.

Skenes is already among the best P in baseball and had an all time, historic rookie season.

It was the right call and still is today. Easily.

Well that's interesting. Super small sample size but a 136 OPS+ in the majors. I'm tired of saying "platoon option" but seems like a decent option to run with a Canario/Suwinski platoon.

Had a slash line of .306/.419/.611 in 36 ABs in spring training. If this means Bae is getting demoted I'm all for it.

I get that, but your best player is only playing in 20% of your games. For a great organization, I would be on board. But for this dumpster fire org that can't develop bats, Langford and Crews were nearly plug and play every day hitters, that's why I would have chose that route. Also, I love watching offense more than great pitching.

Mlod looked phenomenal in the first inning but it would be hilarious if he shows himself to be a dominant 2+ IP pitcher given the situation in the bullpen.

Well cool, 1-4 now on the year. Could be a 100 loss team.

Sure glad we made Mlod into a worse Oviedo instead of displacing Bednar

It's unbelievable how grueling it is to watch this team.

I imagine there are going to be too many Yankee fans at the park this weekend, but I really wonder how soon the boos are gonna rain down. I don't think anyone is going to have patience with this and I don't think the cynicism of some people in an online discussion board is all that different from the pulse of where the fanbase is.

Having a superstar changes the whole dynamic.

So it hasn’t even been a week yet and it’s already just wait until Skenes pitches nothing else matters. Jones is out until July and Keller will be traded in July

1. The odds on Canario being anything more than maybe the RH version of Suwinski aren't particularly high but they should be taking shots like this instead of trotting out Pham and Frazier every day of the week.

2. Sitting at 1-4 with a bullpen game tomorrow is a bad place to be.

3. Speaking of Pham and Frazier, as of the 8th inning and after Frazier's flare RBI single, they are a combined 5-for-31. I'll predict Frazier to be DFA'ed on June 11 and Pham to be traded for future considerations on July 29.

I am definitely guilty of taking the hot starts in recent years for granted. They were propped up by some weird things, including actually taking care of business against really bad teams (imagine that), but they also at least instilled some false hope that maybe we could hang in the mix for a while.

The division is an ugly mess. I genuinely believe the Brewers are still going to win it, though maybe the Cubs will, or maybe the Reds will get their shit together and rise up. But the Brewers are still the favorites in my mind until someone shows otherwise, as this is a team that made the postseason and made a little bit of noise last year.

In their home opener today, they ran out a bullpen game and got smoked. The NL Central is an absolute joke. We have the best pitcher in baseball, or the second or third if you want to nitpick that distinction. It's enough to just make you go crazy... all it would have taken was a modicum of effort to shake up a few key spots, invest in one difference-making bat, and it's a totally different situation even if we did start the season out cold.

We're staring down at 6 months of this bullshit. I'm sure many of us (myself included) will be back in here tomorrow night repeating the same things. I hope this team gets booed off the field this weekend.

this is an absolutely horrible team no doubt about it

Honestly, at this point, having watched the Pirates since the late 90's, I just watch for the exciting young players that will be unfortunately shipped off in time. Skenes is the only reason I renewed my mlb.tv subscription this year.

Harrington is at least a reason to tune into tonight's loss, but it's also hard to imagine how this could have gone any other way. I guess maybe if Mlod could have gone 4 IP, then the plan was to use relievers to extend that game and save Wentz to pitch tonight?

It doesn't make a lot of sense, but the overall sloppiness and not-care-dness makes me think that naybe we did plan for 2 bullpen days in a row.
