OT: Pirates Talk: Lets Play Ball

Fundamental baseball gets an F grade under Shelton as well. Sloppy play has plagued his teams and that is heavily on the coaching staff. You might not have the best talent at your disposal, but proper decisions on the diamond can still be made consistently and they aren't here.

I'm not holding my O2 but the first big improvement we could possibly make is actually employing a manager with a track record. That alone will add a few wins to the bottom line.

Falter's having a nice outing today, glad to see he's continuing what he did last year.

I'm not going to count my eggs before they hatch with Suwinski, but him returning to form as a righty mashing LFer would be massive for this offense. Pham in a righty platoon spot would be a better use of him and Suwinski adds some nice middle of the lineup power. Still though, I've been fooled so many times by him that I'm not believing it until he's still hitting in like June.

I'm like somewhat surprised by this for some reason while also indifferent, but the experience of watching this team is literally the exact same as the entirety of last year. It's the same exact team.

Case in point: Falter is doing a fine job, ho hum, but the double + conversion to a run with small ball has thrown a win into serious doubt.

Cruz with his 3rd walk of the day, steals a base and then scores on a RBI single from Bart.

Honestly Cruz may be playing himself into having him as a leadoff hitter. Don't screw with it if he's working in the #3 spot, but with Horwitz back I wonder if they could switch it up to Cruz, Reynolds, Horwitz and Bart as their #1-#4 hitters.

3-2 now, 2 singles with a throwing error as IKF was stealing 2nd.

This team had a super hot start with its base stealing either last year or the year before as well, but it cooled off a ton as the season went on. They really need to keep pushing the pace this year with it, they don't have the power they need so they need a bunch of walks/singles and extend it to doubles with stolen bases.

This team's bullpen is legitimately awful, and another boneheaded defensive decision from Cruz just adds salt to the wound.

"We want to win in the margins"

"We have a dogshit bullpen and players with terrible defensive fundamentals"

Yeah maybe these two things don't work together well.
