OT: Pirates Talk: Lets Play Ball

I don't see how Duran will improve the team. Duran is a plus defender, but his bat has too much variance and he is only a year younger than Keller so it isn't as if the team is getting younger and can expect that hitting peak again. At least, I wouldn't be expecting one when someone is 29+.

I know he has his haters, but Keller has been a durable, above average starter since his debut in 2019 and has 1 season where he was below a solid starter. Other than Keller, who are we expecting to be in the rotation and can eat innings other than Skenes? #5 has been in flux all year, Heaney can eat innings but is a full run below his average in both ERA and FIP and will be flipped, while Falter is a younger Heaney with 1.5 years of a track record. The rotation would then be Skenes, 2 soft tossers and then what, Mlod and hope a AAA arm pans out? Have we forgotten that the bullpen hasn't been a strength this year?

It's definitely fair to question even the idea of Duran. I think he has some warts in his game and is not gonna age well after another year or two, and even setting them aside, the current team is still in a huge mess.

My ramblings were more generated by seeing the news and having the assumption that Keller is going to be shopped this summer. All things being equal, I think we're better off just concentrating our strength and hoping injury luck stays mostly in our favor. For as bad as things have been, it's possible that they could be even worse if the starting pitching wasn't performing at a high level.

It's still feasible that we add to the lineup and shore up the bullpen and go into 2026 with a puncher's chance. Moving Keller is probably chucking that thin chance out the window. [And there's also some knockdown effects from previous deals... I don't want to overrate Luis Ortiz, but if Ortiz was still around, maybe the blow of a Keller trade could be softened somewhat].

Keller is going to be shopped depending on what site you go bye duran option voids if traded. So he just has the 2 years of arbitration left

If the Buccos manage to lose this game vs a guy with a 6 ERA, Paul Skenes might just pull a Derrick Bellesque "Operation Shutdown".:baghead:

BC has made so many bad trades with the Pirates, but the IKF trade is at least looking like a good one. If he was a bit better defensively, he'd be exactly what you want out of your SS.

Also really nice to see Gonzales back. With Horwitz and Gonzales healthy again, any sort of failures with the offense come purely down to Cherington not adding enough at this point.

I'm not keen on trading Keller right now with Jones' injury, but I think you're selling Heaney and Falter short here. I don't think this team should have an issue with their starting pitching with Skenes, Chandler, Jones, Falter and a veteran UFA as their rotation. I wasn't a believer in Falter but he has fully proven he's at least a good #4 starter.

It sucks Jones got hurt because I'd rather trade Jones than Keller. You'd get better value for Jones (without the injury) and I really like Skenes, Keller, Chandler and Falter as their #1-#4. But with Jones being injured, you can't trade him right now.
