Pirates fire Derek Shelton

Shelton isn't the problem there

ownership can't fire themselves

he is certainly a part of the problem, yes, he has very little to work with, but he has made almost everyone worse, and almost always made the wrong decisions.

I am shocked they made the move so early, the last thing they want to do is to pay a guy to not do anything, of course you could say they do that for a large portion of the roster, so what's one more guy

Oh, Shelton is a terrible manager, but, yeah, Pirates have much bigger problems.

Not investing in the team when lucking into the best pitcher of this generation should be a criminal offense.

It's tough for Pittsburgh. Even if the owner was willing to sign Ohtani/Soto contracts or trade for and try to extend a Betts/Freeman, those players wouldn't sign those or similar contracts to be in pittsburgh.

A big reason is the losing culture and irrelvancy they've sustained for years, which you can definitely partly blame on the cheap owner. It's also the geography and culture.

Pirates are forced to overpay for mid free agents if they are to try and build that way. They are one of those teams that has to draft and develop like Tampa, Oakland etc.

They do not need to sign a super huge name like that. Heck, only like 4-5 teams can.

I pressed send early on that by accident, finished my post after but even the 2nd and 3rd tier free agents/players looking to sign and trade is just unrealistic really.

Pirates are one of those orgs that have to be shrewd and draft and develop and idefinty undervalued players in trades/rule 5's etc if they are to ever build a sustainble winning team.

Who's their best homegrown player since prime McCutchen (to impact the Pirates, not another team)? Bryan Reynolds?

Just not good enough at all.....

Yes, they are clearly not a destination, but if you have a contending teams, good players will come for a chance to win. They do have to do a better job setting up the foundation before that happens, that's for sure.

Even Reynolds was from a trade, they have not drafted/developed hardly any hitters since Bonds, the majority of their good hitters for the last 40 years were brought in via trade

Reynolds
Giles
Bay

As far as guys they developed besides Cutch, there was Aramis Ramirez who had one good season and was moved on in a salary dump, and the "Golden Goose" Pedro Alvarez who turned out to be more of a turkey
